Very good article, I dont 100% agree but has good points to it, I like steam and the 1.6 update makes things quicker and easyer but yes it does have its bugs (its a beta), I cant wait to see the future for steam, i think its pretty promising as everyday I see more and more servers becoming more stable and letting more people play.

Yes, good article, but it still leaves a few questions... well steam is basically a good idea, but (in the current version) it is to unflexible and leaves to few choices to the user. it's not only delivering the content, it's restricting the ways you use it (the content). why should something like steam be needed to play/join/spectate a game?

The author, William "CubicVirtuoso" McMahon, is not alone in the CS community. Like many others, he needs to be reminded about the definition of beta testing.

If these problems Valve have faced over the last week were related to the final release of Steam, then they would deserve all the criticism they've had. However, seeing as this is merely a beta release, they should be applauded for using this opportunity to test and fix the Steam system before it is actually released.

Wow, this guy needs to look up BETA and NON-PUBLIC release in the dictionary or something. He critisizes Steam for being too buggy, even though its BETA, and yells at Valve for not having enough bandwidth for a public release, even though this was NOT a public release and leaked Steam Beta's were floating about. Also, I'm not sure about anybody else, but my net SUCKS ASS, and it only took me 20 minutes to update my steam to the correct version from a fresh install, and I'm limited to freakin 50k down! I also like the part where he interjects his ideas for Valve to implemene into Steam, even though its buggy as hell, laggy as hell, and the dev's are most likely running 18 hour days trying to fix current problems. This guy needs to GET A FUCKIN CLUE before he bashes Vavle and Steam.....Really bad article and really bad Author

Very stupid article. Here's some things I didn't agree with.

Then I had to wait 2 days for all the updates to finish downloading and installing on my computer.

Well, is your connection 56k? Perhaps others are having the same problem as you, but when I loaded Steam the day it was released (or leaked I guess), I had to wait a grand total of 20 minutes before I could play CS.

I started to play CS 1.6 (no big deal just another update)

Actually it is a big deal. New guns, tactical shield, new map, changed maps, etc. EVERYONE has been waiting for this. By saying, "no big deal" you make yourself sound very ignorant, and it makes your article suddenly seem very unintelligent and unimportant.

I personally believe that Steam is Valves way of putting its foot in the Half-Life door once again. I think Valve believes that people are starting to forget who started Half-Life and is trying to regain their power.

And when have they lost power? I don't think anyone has forgotten who made Half-life, and I think this opinion is very stupid and poorly thought out. Just floating around the community, via forums, IRC, servers etc., you hear the word Valve everywhere. Can I give at least one good example? Valve's Anti-Cheat.

The article is like every other flame towards Valve, just presented very well. Whoever wrote it has to remember one word, "beta!" Even though they mention Steam was never actually released but only leaked, I think they've forgotten that.

Steams great when its working well, and its works well now. Quicker than going to the shop and installing a game from cd when you get back.

Im glad most of the other comments here seem to follow my frame of mind, althoguh, maybe its my patience, but I have yet to connect to a 1,6 server, despite having had steam 2 since the beta release day. I am aware of others who successfully used it even down my road, but for some reason i get to the server select, click connect and then hang about forever, (ell 20 mins is the limit of my patience)

I think STeam is a great idea cos I am getting increasingly frustrated by even obvoius cheats out there! Surely there should be some kind of legal punishment or floggin for performence enhancers??

Its getting so u cant have a good game, OK, Heres a question? Whats the best anti cheat mod you can add to a server?,

I have hl guard adn tbh, It sucks

Is there a public blacklist of wonids too? My server says there are none in the ban list, But I owuld think somewhere there is a list of naughty boys n guirls out there.

AH yes, I laughed at that. If you look at one of his screenshots where it shows GAMES, all of them are highlighted, meaning he downloaded every single one of them, lol. I didn't care about any other games so I just downloaded CS. When he said it took him two days, I was very curious as to how that could happen besides 56K.

Here, in this screenshot http://www.halflife.org/exclusives/tosteam1.gif look at Games, and under MY GAMES all of them are available to play, which is the definite reason it took him two days, lol. He probably hasn't even touched any of the other games, what a joke this guy is.
