I'm a huge fan of the H&K Mk.23 SOCOM pistol, and I am very sad to say that there is not much this release has going in its favor. Most of the things I will point out are realism issues (yes, I am a realism freak, before you ask) so naturally, these will make or break any replacement for me.
OK, I don't want to be completely negative on this one so, I'll point out the pros as well as the cons. The pros are as follows:
The animations are top-notch, as we all know.
The CZ arms are some of the best out there, IMO.
All the features of the real SOCOM are well represented
(Threaded barrel, de-cocker, slide-release, etc.).
I like the idea of a SOCOM in place of the normal USP Tactical.
The calibers match up, both are .45 Auto.
(I hate when people make .357Mag Desert Eagles b/c the
damage is tweaked to a .50AE round and doesn't feel
right at all. Also, 9mm USPs wouldn't do NEARLY as much
damage as a .45ACP, some " 'Ultimate USP' " *chuckle*)
I, personally, like the custom sounds, and they are definitely a +!
That leaves us with the cons:
The model itself is too small, believe it or not, the SOCOM is very
close to Desert Eagle size, this is closer to the size of
a Walther P99.
Some of the proportions are just plain wrong, for instance, the
slide is way too short (height wise) and the weapon
itself should also be longer length wise.
The trigger guard is not long enough (this is probably where some
of the length was lost on the overall weapon).
The skins were ugly at best, way too beat up to look like it's
been in the hands of a pro.
The silver skin just plain out of place, making the slide silver
destroys the goal of the weapon, to be sleek, low
profile, and stealthy, not to mention that the military
version which was skinned (you can tell by the
"USSOCOM" designation) will never be made in a silver
slide version.
Overall, a decent attempt at a totally awesome firearm. With a good skin, proportions fixed, and the overall size up-scaled by about 20-30%, I wouldn't hesitate to give this package a 9! But, until then, I can only give it a 5.
