    CS 1.6 BETA Update 01.31.03

From the we told you it was going to happen department: An update to the CS 1.6 BETA was just provided to Steam BETA testers. This automatic self-installing update is the first of what will probably be many updates to the 1.6 BETA. Erik Johnson, the "in your face" VALVe employee whose name ends with K, posted this notice about the update today:[break="Click here for Erik's statement & the changelog"]
We've pushed new versions of Counter-Strike and the Dedicated Server to the Steam beta.

If you launch either of these products now you will recieve this new version.

For details on what changed, you can right click on the games in your Games list, or visit these pages:

    http://www.steampowered.com/platform/up...r-Strike.html

    http://www.steampowered.com/platform/up...20Server.html

      bug fixes

    • fixed not being able to drop the c4 as a terrorist while holding a shield without dropping the shield first.

    • fixed shield bullet penetration bug. bullets will not penetrate the shield under any situation.

    • fixed crash when running rcon commands from the client.

    • bringing up friends in-game will work faster now.

    • fixed problem where the incorrect skyboxes were shown in some maps.

    • fixed incorrect prices for some of the weapons in text style buy menus.

    • fixed flashbang price being shown incorrectly as $300.
Steam users only need to start the game to automatically get the new upgrade. Easy, automatic, self-installed updates like this are part of what could potentially make Steam seem like some kind of crazy-ass angel. Rizzuh does a good job of explaining how Steam works in his CS 1.6: Hands-On preview, or you could read the description from the Steam site if you're into that sort of thing.

Currently new admissions to the BETA are suspended so we cannot provide you with the installation program. We will let you know as soon as this changes. Thanks go to f00kie and some anonymous person for submitting this to us.

And by "crazy-ass" I mean "insanely-donkeyish" which I believe lends the statement a level of acceptability.

Can't they just leave the buymenus the way they are. Since I'm so lazy, I will now complain about having to update my aliases.

Not that big of a deal. All you do is change the aliases around. He'll just have to release an update, that's all. No biggie.

airstrip got gayer, no big change to the map. I dont see it in CAL or any other leagues yet, unless narby fixes it.

Acer, airstrip got way better, are you kidding? That new route is a nice change I think.

Aztec got nice new ferns. Inferno got its missing crate back and its dark hallways are light now.

I never seem to understand a word you say, perhaps for the best.

Well, theres a new route, wow! but the CTs cant defend bombsite A still. T's get there faster, so t's will dominate the map.

I think the dark spot in inferno on the ramp thing should of stayed dark so the CTS dont awp whore them!

Because this question has been asked numerous times without it being really answered (flame me if I'm wrong), when is the real version of 1.6 coming out?

[Edit by Nighthawk: Have you ever considered that if an official release date had been given by VALVe, it would be posted all over CSN where you couldn't help but see it? No, I guess you haven't really thought that one through, have you?]

                          Narbs TOTALLY missed the point.

Whenever terrorists rush left and plant quick, it's all over.

Wtf? New pathway leads to underpass/bridge area? Pretty stupid...

It's about a 30 meg update (at least, was for me). That went pretty quick on my zippy little 56k, about 2 hours. :) I'm a patient guy, afterall.

Really, really glad to see some of these fixes. Bah, I'll have to look through the buy menus again and fix my buy scripts. :) Ah well, not a big deal really. As always, excellent work VALVe, keep it up.

Now if I could only figure out why my controls freeze up for about 5 seconds every time I return from the console or just pressing ESC (everything but mouse looking). It's rather annoying.

You should note the entrance to the new route is easily covered by a competant CT team from the bridge which was very tough to break through. This led to site A being used 95% of the time and B getting VERY little action.

As for not being used in CAL, it's very early to be calling shots like that given that the map has only just entered testing. If you're looking at a good example of a map with 3 routes to each bomb site look at Dust 2, possibly one of the most interesting and tactical of the CAL maps.
                              Narbs TOTALLY missed the point.

Stupid why? Opening up a bomb site that's hardly used because it's so easy to cover?
Well, theres a new route, wow! but the CTs cant defend bombsite A still. T's get there faster, so t's will dominate the map.

If needs be, site A will be tweaked to allow the CT to get there slightly earlier, that's after all, the point of a beta test.

                              AWP whoring works both ways.
