If you kick someone in the nadz while playing basketball, it is takin serious but if it's by accident then it shouldnt be taken seriously and usually the person would apoligize. Well, maybe the servers you played in but from my experince, hardly no one plays a team and no one uses the voice communication. After reading your response towords me, so in my conclusion, your 1 of those no life losers who sit at the computer all day playing counter-strike and since you have no life and you sit at the computer all day, you must take somthing serious and that is counter-strike and yes, your opinions are also worthless and yes, I did read the article and its all bullshit. I personally believe that the effects you bring on your own mind, the way you affect what you think and such, do matter. Yes, whether you're affecting another living being certainly does matter, but I would argue that doing things that seem wrong to you affects your conscience. That matters, in my opinion. Then again, you seem to be much more relativistic in your views than I am, so perhaps that enters into the equation.

Of course, doing things that "seem" wrong are going to affect your conscience. It's natural for a "moral" person to halt and consult his thoughts on something he hasn't come to a conclusion on. Generally, this is because of a notion i'll get to below.

As far as the "dreaming" comment, well, I don't have any active control over my actions in a dream. In dreams, things that would otherwise would seem ludicrous are perceived as normal, and we "react" to these things in stride. I see that as rather different from any virtual world (even if it is a far different reality from what we are used to) where we are directly controlling our actions, and have full control of our mental faculties.

I don't think it's any different at all. At least, not like that. There are plenty of people who've claimed to not have full control over their mental faculties after doing "bad" things during their WAKING hours; a shady claim in any case. It could be reasoned that not taking control of your actions in your dreams is "bad", but no one's ever thought to do so simply because no one is affected by your actions in the dream other than you. If you go further, this notion seems to be the sole deciding point on a LOT of what is and isn't considered to be moral, ethical, or "good". How many times have you heard or used the line "So what? It's not hurting anyone."?



In dreams, sometimes things that are "off" are perceived as normal. A lot of this has to do with dreams being a tool for memory, for sorting and filing away shit in your head when the day is done, but that's neither here nor there. Taking abnormal things as normal in dreams comes with not really questioning what's going on. Part of doing that brings us to lucid dreaming, which is remarkably similar to what you described, so i think there is an applicable similarity for "murdering" someone in a dream and "murdering" someone in an advanced form of VR. In essence, these things are good for sussing out your ethics in "real life" ("I CAN kill this guy, but does it really make sense?) and would be absolutely EXCELLENT in wondering about just how serious the ramifications would be, but are nothing to worry about as long as no living being is directly affected. Following that basic rule, it's all the same as wondering about doing something while awake and unplugged. Hence, no real ethical dilemma with games.



As for games being irrelivant, the heart of the matter -both in a game and outside of it- is really whether you can get away with it or not. To use your example of "If we wake up and have a handgun sitting on our desk next to our bed... are we still in the game or not? Can we shoot someone to find out?", getting caught would be the biggest issue, along with having a reason for shooting someone. When you think about it, these are relevant reasons in real life. If you only refrain from shooting people for fear of getting caught, then there is no real ethical dilemma for you. If you do not have any reason to shoot someone, there is no ethical dilemma for you either. The only conflict, as far as i can see, comes from having 1 or more incongruities in your motives. Those, then, become the issue. If i were to go into the spiral of typical existential rigamarole, what makes you so sure that you're in "reality" when you wake up? What keeps you from shooting people NOW? And who says that shooting a guy would give any sort of confirmation of reality?



You simply do not want to have the act of shooting something coupled with uncertain motives, whether it be in CS, a more advanced technology, or "real life". In this way, all of the concerns you and Falconr put forth are applicable even without the kind of platform you're wondering about.



Lucid dreaming or not, dreams still provide an environment where you can do things that you shouldn't, wouldn't, or couldn't do in reality, which is in the realm of what Falconr was talking about unless i'm mistaken. Eyes Wide Shut, for example, took this sort of notion and ran with it. Boy, did it run. For 2-and-a-half god damned hours. This movie annoyed the piss out of me simply because there was a whole lot going on based on someone freaking out about something "bad" they "wanted" to do or somesuch. It's similar to this issue in the way that you can dork around thinking about it, recreating it in a dream or some sort of proto-reality. That all amounts to "almost" in my book, and "almost" only counts with horseshoes and hand grenades. Again, a stepping stone in the matter is what any 1 person perceives to be "reality", and their grasp on it. This especially annoyed me because if you take this sort of thing far enough, there isn't much space before you're wondering what kind of monster you are for even THINKING about doing something "bad", which i think we can universally agree on as idiotic.
