WCG Drops Q3, Purse to be $400,000

In shocking news, the World Cyber Games has dropped its Quake 3 tournament completely. Shackes is reporting the story with a full compliment of Q3 player's comments. Here is a peak.
...As Kuku published yesterday, the games list doesn't include Quake 3. The games like he said are Starcraft: Broodwar, Warcraft 3, Age of Mythology, FIFA 2003, UT2003, and Half-Life: Counter-Strike. I don't understand their logic in this move, Quake 3 was the most popular game at the WCG 2002 event with 51 representatives behind Starcraft. Both FIFA and AOE had less players than Quake 3 did, Unreal only had half the number of Q3 players.
You can check out the article in its entirety here. This is deja-vu for many Quake 3 competitors as the CPL dropped the Q3 tourney as its primary tournament back a few years ago.

Outta curiosity, is it Quake 3: Arena or Quake 3: Team Arena? Big difference.

Yeah, it's pretty sad to see Quake go. Great game. I used to pwn with railgun :)

It is Quake 3 Arena. Usually most tournaments use the OSP or the CPMA mod.

used to love the Q3 Rocket Arena mod. Fast gameplay, good maps.

On another note, how the hell is Starcraft still a popular game. It's what, 4 years old now? 1998, i think is when it was made. It's as old as HL, but not as good. It has NO replay value. HL has mods, maps, etc. Starcraft has... 1 addon and a bunch of porn ads on the blizzard.net chat server.

Is it because id software is charging for the use of Quake III? I think I remember reading a while back that the CPL doesnt support Quake III for that very same reason.

I would say it's probably politically motivated.

hehe, i know. It must be just about all their computers can handle. They have Starcraft action figures, starcraft characters on Dominos bags, all kinds of stuff. Kinda scary how a simple video game there can become a national icon. I think even little kids in Korea know who the Zerg,Protoss, and Terran are.

Apparently Angel replied in the comments section, though I obviously can't prove this is the real person:
If id software would guarantee us that they would not require a signed commercial exploitation agreement and/or require any payment for our use of the game, CPL would consider hosting a one-on-one Quake 3 tournament at the Winter 2003 Event.

Anyone has any contacts at id? We have not spoken to them in over two years.
