Recently I had a chance to get an interview with up-and-coming CAL-invite team Ascension. Currently sitting pretty at 11-4 in CAL-i, they're on track to make a nice debut in the playoffs. Here's a snippet regarding their recent pickups of clan hopper Funk and Kimber:

Good point... it'd be a rare CS player who'd be 6'3 and built like a sherman tank...



But I don't think that's what's stopping esports from becoming recognised... give it time... it'll happen.

I'm not sure that I want eSports to gain the notoriety and respect that regular professional Sport enjoys. I do believe that computer games are mentally engaging, however, they lack a physical aspect that makes Sport a challenge to our physical limitations. Sure, games challenge our mental limitations, but they do not engage us in the same way soccer or pole-vaulting do.



Because of the jingoistic nature of Sport worship (see Chomsky et al) and the physical dominance roles in human society, there can be little hope for the mass idolization of eAthletes, whose sole claim to physical dominance is, at best, virtual.



Having said that, I think that eSports could get TV coverage in the way that major billiards/snooker or chess matches get. I think that the cult following of certain members of these communities could also arise in eSports. Just like these communities, however, mainstream culture is not likely to recognize them as heroes, per se. For example, while some among us may idolize a great chess player, all of us, in some way, idolize athletes.
