An inside source at Vivendi (go Random!) told me that VALVe is shutting down the old machines they used for hosting the Half-Life authentication services today. The DNS changes to VALVe have had one week to propagate so there should be minimal impact.
Note, I am sure there are users out there that have hardcoded IP addresses for Half-Life play rather than using the DNS. Such changes are made by more experienced users and never recommended. These users will not be able to play once the machines are offline.
