Football was a hobby / getaway / entertainment source before it became the sport we all now know and love. Same with Basketball, Baseball - all of them. They all started out as hobbies.

But regardless, I think it's not wise to take the extreme on either side of the seriousness/fun aspect. Yes, enjoyment is the ultimate goal for most people. How are they getting that enjoyment, though?



For some, just playing with friends is enough. For others, doing well makes it fun. Doing wacky things or using crappy guns might be what makes others enjoy the game. Heck, sometimes committing suicide en masse brings me more laughs and tears of joy than a 20-5 score.



But for some, the enjoyment comes from their sense of pride in being at the top, being at the very peak of their personal refinement and skill as they play. For you to get angry with those who want to play the game "seriously" is to try to deny them their way of having fun.



The same is true of sports. Some of us love pick up games of basketball, others want to run with the big boys and play on a higher level. The analogy still really holds true in how you treat the game, imho. Either way, you're getting enjoyment out of the game, but you'll tend to go for the type of play that brings you personal enjoyment.

This goes for me. since i play in china with gayass shanghai-nese that hack and gernade spam all the time it's pretty cool being on the top. i forgot about ppl in america but ppl here hav no sense of pride when their playing cs.

If you'd look in the sub-heading of the title, you'd see "cs-nation updates" as the type of news post. Related articles then are anything that has to do with CSN updates, like it says. most clans are like the cliques in high school: gayzor! little clanners get pwned all the time on my server by the regulars. joining a clan is right up there with going to Klingon language camp on the lame scale. computer games are dorky enough already with out added layers of gayness. CS is a game not a freaking lifestyle.

I think the GameSpy article hit the nail on the head. Computer gaming isn't a sport. And anyone who thinks that it is... well... is a moron. Gaming is fun though. It's a hobby, and with the internet, clans do compare to "neighborhood softball leagues". But it's important to keep it in perspective.



As technology improves, I think somewhere down the line, computer games and sports may intersect. Who knows what lies ahead. Virtual reality machines might meet science-fiction one day. Games do serve a purpose other than fun. The military uses games to train soldiers. And the Air Force is using Remote Aerial Vehicles which function very much like a flight simulator. Perhaps some sort of Orwellian future awaits with gaming nerds acting as Big Brother. It's a scary thought. :lol:

Good feature. It IS hard to see it as a proper sport but if ppl say darts is a sport its hard to deny cs being one.

I have to say I enjoyed his article, but rizzuh and asspennies do bring up some things that were a bit opinionated in it rather than factual. I have to disagree on a couple points here, though -



1. The point is not that competition is bad - if it were, then you could argue against anything competitive, whether it be academics, sports, or pie eating. The point is that the many tenets of stability, maturity, and continuity that are required for something to become "big" do not exist in video gaming.



2. Nobody is making a "living" off of gaming. Not even fatal1ty or anyone - anyone who claims so is conveniently lumping in merchandise sales with prize money. You also have to still not only make people want to watch, you have to make them want to PAY to watch.



3. Video gaming is a huge market, but still a "niche" in competition. There is a reason why it is classified in the alternative category under paintball and that weird TNN show where people play basketball on trampolines - there just isn't quite the mass market amazement appeal.



4. (sorry, I kinda got off track from disagreements): Final disagreement - the players/gamers matter a LOT to the activity. Look at how baseball's spoiled, overpaid crybabies cost their teams millions in fan revenue during the strike. Similarly, it's an unfortunate fact that your average gamer is still either in high school or living in his mother's basement. It's hard to have a bigger presence when your "athletes" are struggling with acne. Even if you do have older gamers, most of them had better have day jobs...



In addition to the age, the average attitude of your high level CAL style gamer is awful, simply awful. The proliferation of whiny, immature pricks who call those less skilled "noobs" and "fgts" is not exactly showing potential sponsors "hey, let's give THEM money!". This goes hand in hand with the age issue. Sure, the NBA had dennis rodman, but not 5000 of him.



Final Final point (sorry): Video games are still a rich man/boy's activity. The best part about actual sports are that it doesn't take much to try or play. Basketball has public courts, and a basketball is $20. Want to play cs? Figure $500-1000 or so for a good computer. Considering the amount of hours it takes to be "good" at an activity, it's not likely you'll see the lower income rags to riches story anytime soon in a video game (also note spoiled kids with high end pc's contribute to the above mentioned bad attitudes, etc etc).

Ok, I've been way too long winded here, but to summarize: I love competition, as long as it's in good spirits. To play with friends and see if you can beat another organized team is pretty fun if done right and if both sides are mature. However, this is often not the case, and until then video gaming cannot hope to advance beyond its present apex.
