The original halflife itself was annouced, scrapped, announced and postponed for quiet a while. While valve might have had "technology like unreal 2003's for years" so Epic. It is typical in a development to make your engine and THEN work on the game, meaning that by the time of release while it seems revolutionary it isnt. Valve is just trying to build hype for their engine wich while showing promise still doesnt look to be all that next generation in features. Think of the final fantasy movie, it might have been somewhat impressive on release but that technology used to render it was technically years old. Released products went through a development and growth cylce over a period.

Valve will hopefully make whatever release date they give. With so many delayed products under their control they need a new game to show that they arnt just the company that bought CS. Even if there engine isnt the most advanced they NEED to move it or risk falling into the jones's syndrome. DNF has done this, being delayed and developed across so many engines it makes you wonder how many games they have made by now.

From what ive seen HL2's engine is not anywere near as advanced as DOOM 3's. While it might push poly counts as high or higher, and has great texture detail, it most obviously lacks the extensive lighting that is the defining tech in DOOM3. You would be amazed at the amount of polys an engine could pump if it wasnt for little features like light, but it is those features that stand out the most.

That said I cant wait to see more on this. While not graphically groundbreaking it should still be awsome if valve can evolve their original concept along with their graphical tech.
