getting back to what the article was actually about, how many more mods can there be? games themselves are already scraping the barrel for new ideas, how much more can mods offer?
It's not really a matter of "What more could possibly be done?", it's more a matter of "What can't be done YET?" and "who's fucked up enough to try doing it anyway?". All that's left after that is doing x mod WELL instead of just relying solely on oddity or freshness. Someone could have a heyday just by taking CS and fixing what's broken, for example.
And it's not like all mods have to be first-person view shooters, like most seem to think. Really, the problem is that we just don't have enough people who have the time, energy, or resources to put their ideas into a mod. Steaming pile of poorly implemented crap as it may be, did you honestly see Ricochet coming? And, back on the other point, Ricochet itself is proof that you need effort more than you need radically new ideas.
I spent a fair amount of time playing the ESF mod for HL but that's because i'm obsessed with DBZ, thousands of others weren't appealed to by the subject matter so they passed it by.I wonder why?
"I can literally eat a truck and shit it out in a manner that would destroy this planet!"
"Well, thanks to my training at the event horizon of a black hole, i can blow holes in the toilet when i piss!"
"GRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAH!"
"Oh, yeah...GRRRRRRAAAAAAAAH!"
They made a DBZ mod for Q3 too. I think they discovered that there were some balance problems with the subject matter when you have one player with a power level of 20 billion going against another player with one of 25 billion. On that matter, i do believe i've heard players tell the modmaker something along the lines of "No shit, Sherlock".
We're spoilt for choice. So regardless if HL2 is a success, and i think it can pretty much guarantee itself, the modders are going to have difficulty bringing anything really new to the table. Even the innovators aren't doing it anymore, CS *2* after all can hardly be called innovative. It doesn't have to be. It just has to be a solid progression of what came before it. People really aren't that picky when you give them a game that isn't entirely retarded. CS itself was more of a progression into an Action Quake 2 team mode that didn't suck than it was a mind-blowing innovation.
