Erk! - now that looks a bit of alright!

I'm just wondering what kind of spec do you think HL2 will need?

I've seen Doom3 playing for real and I was in awe. But hl2 definitely kicks out doom3. Me think those screenshots are fake.

HL2 engines is kicking around more polygons than doom3 does most likely, but in contrast doom3 uses far more lighting effects to replace the depth. Also as far as I have heard, doom3's animation system is still superior in many ways.

You have to separate liking the art direction from technological superiority. Ill admit I appreciate the overall look of hl2 much more than doom3, but much like a lot of other engines it isn't because doom3 has a worse engine. They just have a far more misogynistic setting and story then hl2's. A lot of the time it is how you use the technology you have that will help propel the game, and obviously hl2 is probably going to better use its assets.

helloworld, I'd say that Doom3 looks in some ways like a sub-par team of the NBA, where as HL2 currently looks like the all-stars of the WNBA.

HL2 screenshots look like they've perfected many of the older-generation techniques, and gotten a fabulous look from it. Doom 3 looks more like it's moving onto the next level, but it'll be a while before that generation of technology matures to the point where it has the same perfection in it's class.

Ultimately, though, the combination of the perfectionist techniques with the next-generation rendering methods will be very spectacular, but that's a few years away, I'm sure.

I take the presentation and compare it to previous efforts. Id has always made flexible, powerful engines but doesn't always make the best choices in art direction. Color for example, in the quake series, has always been poor. When still working with quake2 mods we had a project to try and convert quake3 textures with there full color depth, to the quake2 pallet. Id say about 90% of all the textures could be ported with little loss in detail. The fact is that quake3's engine could have looked better, but quake3 itself didn't let it. Quake2 was interesting in the fact that a single file controlled the engine pallet. A mod could easily change the color choices available to it. Quake 2 paint ball is one of the only mods I know of that did it, and it instantly improved the overall visual appeal of the game.

I think that technology wise, doom3 is still pushing ahead by quite a bit but half-life is just going to be better produced. No amount of technology can replace good production. Half-life is using many techniques that are very new, it isn't that they mastered the older technique but that they have obviously polished the newer ones. Many of the lighting effects that make doom3 impressive, are overdone. The maps for the players overplay the lighting making them look plastic, and fake. The same methods are used in HL2 but they are far better implemented, and valve obviously worked to make them subtle but effective.

I still think to this day some of the earliest scenes of doom3 I saw were better in some ways to the product they have shown so far, mostly because while underdeveloped they were more interesting.

Damn. looks like it's time to ditch the 900mhz slot-A. i can barely play splinter cell at 800x600 as it is. my PC is 3 years old and doesn't even have a exhaust fan, so i took the case off. I'm a l337 haxzor.

u dont need bleeding edge graphics to make one hell of an enjoyable game! but at the time, HL had amazing graphics.
