Graphically, I still don't think it'll be "better" than Doom III, as the unified lighting really is pretty neat. Play the Tenebrae mod of Quake I sometime, and you'll see how the shadows really sweeten things up. That's just a small taste of what's to come in Doom III.

I still think HL2 will be a better experience, though, and it'll be modded to kingdom come. Doom III is gonna be freaky, though. I can't wait to get my hands on both of them. :)

      I doubt a radeon 9800 pro runs doom3 or hl2...
yah, because they built the engine and game before the 9800 came out, and showed it off working fine without it...

      cant wait!

The Half-Life 2 engine is probably more of an achievement that the Doom3 one is. The former is very flexible in what it can do, and the experiences it can convey. Doom3 is *very* limited - And although what it does do, it does very well, you're not going to see the kind of great outdoor scenes you'll see in HL2. And outdoor scenes, ladies and gentlemen, are "win".

Also worth noting that with the HL2 engine there are less restrictions for the mapper too - You have to very careful with your lighting work in D3, else the performance drops through the floor.

Think of how much better for mappers, modelers and coders to make even better modulations for HL2. The VHE screenshots are great because the VHE layout stays the same, and me being a mapper it won't be something TOTALLY new, but a fresh awakening of what HL2 can offer us.

                Counter-Strike on HL2's engine will be phenomenal, I seriously can't wait 4 1/2 months. GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

TBH hl scared the poo out of me, n i'm no tsure if the aging ticker can take any further scariness. Nothing touches Maxpayne for narrative/originality of presentation imho.

having said that, its hl2 impact upon cs that is the most important thing to come out of this, lets not forget this is CS nation not HL Nation. Id be more interested to hear how the experienced mappers, skinners n modellers that visit this site, can tell what may be possible in the future cs2......

I haven't been able to see any pictures on Gamespot for months that arn't ads does anybody know how to fix that?

                    Gamespot says,

"the minimum specs for the game should be around a 700MHz Pentium III with a TNT graphics card."

WHOO HOO! that means I can afford to upgrade my system to play it. It shouldn't cost more that 200 bucks, I've been looking for a good excuse to upgrade and I think I just found one :)

That means I won't have to upgrade at all, but it'll be like riding a bicycle on a motor raceway...

"DOOM 3'S GRAPHICS ARE REALLY AWESOME AND KILL HL2 BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!!" But you forget that you'll need basically a holodeck to run Doom 3 properly. Even then you might have problems. (3DMark03 anyone?) Half-Life 2, if it is true what Valve says, can be run on a pretty average PC. Look at the screen-shots, they don't exactly give the impression that HL 2's graphics will be cruddy. In fact I would wager to say that they look more real than Doom 3's lavish and often times over-the-top visuals. You can whine and moan about bump-mapping and unified lighting until you are blue in the face, but it still doesn't change the fact that you're going to need at least a $500 upgrade to run Doom 3 properly. Half Life 2 seems to have very high quality visuals, which I would argue are competitive with Doom 3, for much less computing power.

Final thought: Somehow I think that Half-Life 2 will be even more innovative then Doom 3. While Return To Castle Wolfenstein was a fun game, it wasn't really too satisfying as a sequel to the original since it wasn't really innovative. So given that track record from id i don't really expect too much from Doom 3. Half-Life 2 on the other hand... Well it's mere development in secrecy is special. The guy that wrote the story for the original Half-Life is writing the story for Half-Life 2, and with this new technology, I believe we're going to see something that's going to blow our socks off. I could be wrong, Doom 3 could redefine the horror genre of PC gaming, but I'm putting my money on Half-Life 2 to revolutionize the industry in ways we can't even imagine yet.

In this orgy of information has there been any talk on the anti cheat tech in HL2?

Heh we wish...then again if you compare the entire lifespan of D2 to the time it will take from now to the patch's release it's a comparatively small amount of time. But really, read some of the i'views in the patch, especially on www.diabloii.net and you'll see that Blizzard has other things on their hands. I'm excited for D2X 1.10 as well, but I think we're going to be in for the long haul.

1.10 will be too little too late IMO. I hear blizzard north is secretly working on a new project though, and word has it is it's a 3D RPG. No word on if it is diablo related or an entire new universe.
