    Narby Interview

Hey all! Being the popular mapper that he is, the good old narby sat down for an interview at Fragbite. In it, he talks about mapping, alludes to a secret covert project he's working on, and lets you in on the secret on how to tell someone you love them. Take a peek:
Can you explain the huge success of these maps?

I think the layouts are pretty easy to learn without being too simplistic or uninteresting. People tend to like brighter maps more, as well as those with more clearly defined choke points. Knowing what to expect the enemy will do gives players a feeling of safety which is obviously more preferable to much more complex levels.
Sounds like a recipe for success! For the rest of the interview, go here, and then after that go to narby's site hosted here on CS-Nation because that's what the cool kids do. You don't want to be uncool, do you?

Not a bad interview, but there wasn't a whole lot of new information.

Decent interview, not a lot new, but good all the same. Even some praise for DaveJ in there, whaddya know.
I plan to get burned out around 25 and retire to scotland to play golf for the rest of my days.
          Beautiful. :)

It's a pity that I still rather dislike Airstrip, because I've liked all of narby's other maps thus far. I guess it just has that "if you want to win, join the T's" feeling, much like Assault. Hopefully this mysterious "next project" (other than quarry) will be interesting. :)

Sorry narby, but I honestly forgot de_airstrip existed ;o

All of your maps and DaveJ Maps are great. Airstrip is an awesome map, very good and beautiful work, but IMO it should just be a showcase map.

The interview is decent, but like TechNine said, there is nothing really new in here.

Keep up the good work, dont let DaveJ take back the spot of having the most frequently played map!

On the contrary, not knowing where someone may come from excites me ALOT! I know a specific girl on this server I play on who loves unexpected explosions in her face.

                I'm done for how :X

Whoa I just noticed that you changed hte aztec picture to a picture of a guy looking at a bomb.. Is he new, the way hes looking at that c4 gives me the impression he's trying to hit his use key inorder to get it to "go"

I can guarantee you have no idea how I plan to claim the top 5 maps for CS2... cos, uhh... I don't either. I have a vision and its scary.

Incidentally, nice choice of words - 'most frequently played map'. I'm tired of people describing it as the most 'popular', because most of the time people are forced to play it against their will... (I fund that department)

Don't be stupid, he's just spotted a curry stain on his collar. They never wash out.

I'm not the biggest fan of dust, but even I can admit that it is a very fun map when you have some time to kill and a bunch of newbies in the server. Here's the one hundred billion dollar question: are you going to make/have you already made de_dust for CS2, and will it be the same layout? I understand that you probably don't really want to, I just have a feeling it would be a smart business move on valve's part to force you to remap it at gunpoint. I honestly believe, for all the bashing dust gets within clan circles, that if you reintroduced it into CS2, it would be a great place to learn whatever new mechanics #2 offers.

Oh yeah, Inferno's my favorite map, and Dust2 is a close second. I miss Thunder, though...

That's a little odd because whenever I play it I feel like the CT's have the advantage. All you need is a few people to watch the bridge and make sure no one goes the other route to the spawn and have a few more go straight to the far bombsite. I like the map though and the colors rock.

Dave, all you have to do is port de_dust/2 over to the Half-Life2/CS2 engine and you will have no problem with having your maps being played the most (unless THAT IS the problem)

New game = new maps. If Valve and/or Minh want me to make Dust for the new game, I'll make it. If not, I won't - I'll do something original.

                            That's the hard part.

I'd never do a straight port unless, like I said, Valve or Minh wanted me to. I'd actually quite like to see other people clone Dust and see how accurately they do it :) (actually, I've seen one attempt of that for CS1 and it was 98% there! - quite spooky...)

Incidentally, this comments page is about an interview with narby. Please try to stay on topic... (says the hypocrit).

Introducing de_dust_nation.com The leetest dust site around!

"Out of all the maps you've made, which one of you the most satified with?

I guess Aztec in terms of its popularity and design. It was my first real CS map and gave me the confidence to try new stuff out with later maps. "

Go super loud ambient sounds ;D
