In the beginning it was all DOOM3 DOOM3 DOMM3, then out of no where valve says let there be light and HL2 was made know to all. And since that moment nary a doom3 could be heard. That alone tells the story of how anticipated this game is and how much pressure is going to be put on valve to deliver only absolut perfection.

Well done coverage, many thanks. :)abysmal wrote..
CS2 will be a whole new game, running on a new engine. CS is a mod of Half-Life, while CS2 runs on the Source engine. Essentially, you'll be able to keep an installation of CS1.7 (if that indeed ends up being the last version of normal CS), and when you buy it (however that happens) you'll also have CS2 which you'll play on different servers.
I aint sure what will happen....will they just disable cs 1.6/1.7 or whatever it is?DarkViper311 wrote..

I still think Doom III is very impressive in different ways, and will bring new techniques to the table that will set trends. Overall I am not impressed with the lighting/shadowing effects I have seen in HL2, where as they've been quite spookey with Doom III.

However, there's much more to both of these games than that one difference, and I see both being great in their own ways. Ultimately, though, I'm more excited about Half-Life 2, if not just for the game itself, then because of the mods that are bound to come.Comment

Dude, ive been playing CS on my pc for about 8 months now... ive read many reviews and seen many screenshots of CSX and i dont think its worth (assuming u dont got an XBox) to go out n get one and buy CSX just so u can use one of those bulky controllers and hav auto aim!!!

I think perhaps you people moaning about the size of the controller have no initiative whatsoever. Firstly, u can by mnimized versions of the controlller, not a big problem. Secondly, I believe they targetted the more adult, affluent generation of gamers, and therefore, the Xbox, is clearly NOT for prepubescent teens.. (of course the need to be cool factor, and the wannabe factor means, as a clever aside to this marketing, that all the teenagers want one cos its what all the grown up gamers play. :))
CSX - thnx for such a lovely review but tbh I don't think i'll be rushing out to buy it for my Xbox , I find after playing on PC almost all my life that playing any game with those annoying anolgue control sticks really frustrate me , I mean lets be honest who is actually gonna sit there on de_aztec for 20mins with an AWP trying to hit someone ? well not me anyway i'll stick to the PC as the graphics are far nicer and basically all the Xbox hype doesn't amount to much as the sales figures show for themselves. The Xbox has always been a 733mhz with an outdated graphics card as you can tell for the measly £120 that most stores are selling them for now and I mean that gives you Halo. For PC fans of CS , I think CSX will disappoint heavily and I won't b shelling out money for a game which I have on my PC and is much better on PC than on a console with Oversized controllers and more buttons than a Boeing 747 and the size of the controller , jesus what was Microsoft thinking , Im fat and my hands are chunky and they don't manage to fit snuggly round the controller.
4/10 Give CSX a miss
Basically if u cant hold the controller, u have no business playing the games.,.. (I await misunderstood flames) And if u are stupid enough not to realise they nmake smaller controllers for the physically weak, and infirm, (n Japanese themselves, U think they have the same size controller? wrong) u would probably not complete the game you wanted to play.
fINALLY, iT IS CLEAR THAT IT WILL BE A MATTER OF TIME ONLY BEFORE a KEYBOARD mouse emulator comes out in plug n play format, fro xbox. Sure MS dont have plans for it., BUt we are aware a) Independant contrrollers are already vailable..
b) USB connectivity is acheivabvle...
c) Theres demand, if theres demand there will always be a supply. Logitech, madkatz, whoever, will say Hey why dont we make a controller, whih has a mouse, n a 6 button keyboard?
And hey presto, U have a mouse keyboard for xbox, so stop freaking so much kiddehs, What you want twill appear, cos They want your money. If u were smart nad made and patented the methodology Then I claim the ip rights over this didea, and U owe me royalties, MUHahahahahhahaahhahahahah Simple, firstly, make hte analogues stick section, in a mouse format, then the buttons, in KEYBOARD, WSAD LAYOUT from a split usb line, so the tow leads would go into tyhe one controller port, perhaps the second analogue stick, adn the d pad, could be turned into buttons as well, I have an arcade stick controller for xbox, and its the usual procedure. What labels the buttons have on em is not important. As long as the switches talk tot the box in the right way.DarkViper311 wrote..

Have you played Tenebrae?

I wouldn't say Doom III (while still quite nice with the ragdoll physics and all) can compare to HL2 in terms of the physics, sure. It's no slouch, though.Tim Willits (lead designer of Doom III) wrote...
Go through Quake sometime with the Tenebrae mod, though. Even with that unpolished version of the tech, the lighting made a huge impact on the gameplay. How much more is it going to do that when you're able to destroy lights, hide in the shadows, and notice enemies approaching by their shadows?
I could see him coming just by his shadow. When he was finally in front of me, I shot him square in the chest with the shotgun. He just happened to be standing in front of a window to another room, and the force of the shotgun blast blew him back through the window and down a short set of stairs. We utilize "rag doll" physics on our characters, so his body tumbled perfectly down the stairs to the bottom. It was one of those moments where you just say, "Wow!"
Doom III is going for the horror genre more than HL2 is, I'd say, and lighting is imho much more important for a horror game (keeping the atmosphere spooky and such) than somewhat superior and/or better implemented physics. For HL2, though, the advanced physics probably matters more, and makes a lot of new things possible.
My overall point was simply that it's different tech for different styles of games, and I wouldn't say one is superior to the other, simply because it's comparing apples to oranges as I see it.DarkViper311 wrote..

I was at this year's E3 and I also had a chance to play CS on the Xbox. And as a everyday cs play like myself I would say Xbox owners should rejoice. The games control's were easy to learn and the only problem I had was planting and defusing the bomb (I just did not know which button to press to switch to teh c4!)
Gameplay was amazing good using teh Xbox controller but it just wasnt as good as playing with a keyboard and mouse, I felt It was nt as accurate with the controller but stil...it gets teh job done.
Gfx are beatufuil and using the Xbox live headset made it just like using my mic/headset with the computer. If I was a counter-strike fan who dosnt have a high end video card or DSL/Cabel modem to support it on my computer I would go out and spend a couple bucks on CSX because the Xbox version is worth the time.
OH AND THAT HL2 LINE TO SEE THAT MOVIE!!! Mann I dint feel like waiting 2-3 hours to see it...but now i regret not seeing it though.Comment

well after all is said and done i'd like to drop a grenade into the tent of the bastard that said CS should go to XBox. for one i think its a real bad idea, to many people are used to a PC platform so they would be more inclined to hop on their computer and kill thgings as aposed to going threw the hub-bub of the XBox. Unless somone is packing a Mac then its fair game for them. it would be just as annoying as the Mac its self.
meanwhile in HL2 land. god damn i can't wait to get my grubby little mits on that game, MUHUHHAHAHAHHAA the Havok engine is so sweet there is bearly anyother way at this time to make it any better.... well maybe actualy killing things by remote but hell technoligy only goes so far...

Well, I know the shadows in Doom 3 will freak me out and the physics in Half-Life 2 will blow me away. Hard for me to say which one will affect gameplay more as I've only seen the Doom 3 video. HL2 one doesn't seem like it wants to work. >_< However, the way this gravity gun sounds, it'll feel like I have the force. Can't wait to get both games and yay for my birthday in September.Comment

No offense, but are you ten years old or something? I laugh everytime someone takes a crack at the XBox's size, because that tells you the person doing that is small/young. Or you could realize that the XBox ships with the smaller and more comfortable controller S now.

Why does everyone assume that every XBox player has played, or even heard of Counter-Strike? Many haven't. Even some PC game players haven't heard of Counter-Strike because they're too wound up in Everquest to care... (they wouldn't care anyway).

My point is - lots of people can't play Counter-Strike because they don't have the equipment, like a PC, but do have an Xbox. That's one set of customers. Then there's the set of people who "don't like PC games" - CSX is for them, and although it is a PC game, it has been changed to match the needs and requirements of a console gamer.
Sorry, I'm just really fed up of people saying CSX is a bad idea. If it were, someone would have stopped it. Valve, Sierra and Microsoft have some of the best advisers, economists, analysts and marketing people in the world between them, and they don't want to lose money any more than we don't want CSX to fail. I'm confident CSX will be an excellent port of a fantastic game, and many many XBox owners across the world will have hours, days and weeks of fun playing it, just like us PC gamers.
They know what they're doing.
Besides, it's too late to stop them. Haha!Comment
