    Barney's Mapping Tutorials

It's been a while, lets see if I still remember how to do this...

Barney, who coincidentally is hosted by CSN, has begun working on a series of tutorials for the popular VALVe Hammer Editor. You can catch the first installment of Barney's tutorials right here. The tutorials will start with pretty basic stuff, and will progressively cover more complex subject matter. Part I covers basic configuration; Part II discusses how to design your first room. Part III, which at the time of this news post has not yet been made available, will discuss compiling.

    Thanks for the heads-up, Stubbyz. Don't worry, I don't think you're gay.

    Look ma, no hands!

        very clever....

now on the tutorials: i ain't bothering with the first, cos i set it up a few 100 times.

the second one is nice, a new look at the old problem. good work....

just a suggestion, but instead of following with stuff like "how to make ladders" and "how to make windows," (not saying you planned on em anyway), which you can find on 100s of other sites, if you make more could we have them on topics that are slightly more advanced and may not have been touched on in other tutorials.

        cheers, keep up the goodwork

btw, you had a chance to check out laguna and shogun? from a pro perspective, what do you make of em?

            ermmmm

            1) At first it said "the popualr model editor Valve Hammer", and was changed, hence my first post.

            2) ladders/windows are progressively harder than the basics.

            3) i didnt ask for just more complicated stuff, i asked for more complicated stuff which hasnt been done before....

            so not really

I've never made a map before in my life, never even attempted to... However this series of tuts are definitely getting me interested. Hopefully the level of explanations continues throughout the entire series, and hopefully some of the more advanced stuff is taken care of as well.

i made a map once, but the amount of lighting and amount of brushes in it was SO complex i couldnt get past the first room and made a bit of the second one lol before i reached the limits.

                :*(

I would do tutorials like this, but I've tried before and just started waffling on and on (hey, who'd have thought!) and getting caught up explaining things. Not fun. Writing tutorials like this is far harder than many people would think!

That's why I stick to largely general articles, ones which can be interpretted individually...

But no one forget, if you're going to learn anything from a tutorial, you'll learn a tutorial won't make you a great designer. They show you the method, but they can't explain the amazing amount of thought that goes into them - much of it is just done subconsciously. The best way to make good maps is to practise, a lot, criticise yourself and always try to beat yourself too.

Expect nothing and you won't be disappointed. That's what happened to me...
