CS:2 , TFC:2 , DOD:2 or whatever it may be that is created.

These will all be using the HL2 Engine.

    CS = HL Engine

    CS:2 = HL:2 Engine

I think that is what you're trying to ask, but I may be wrong for you completly lost me.

Fatboy, why would I bother reading that article :P

      ok, I'll Try to explain.

Mod 'X' is made for the HL2 engine. You can play mod 'X' if you have a copy of HL2.

Then lets say CS2 comes out and CS2 uses the same engine as HL2 as we all know. So is it then possible that mod 'X' will also be available for people that have a copy of CS2

I don't know how to explain it any better...

Your talking of a CS2 Retail.

There may or may not be a CS2 Retail.

If you play CS2 you will need HL2 until a CS2 standalone retail is created.

The answer to your question for now, is no.

OR, it could just be that valve, now OWNING the CS rights will make CS2 a standalone game as TF2 is intended to be along with a DoD2 that will also be standalone.

          Money is the driving factor.

IMO, TF2 will be bundled with HL2 but you will have to BUY CS2.

I mean face it so many p[eople are hooked on CS, they will all fork out their dollars for a CS2.

I dont think so. Surely there will be a retail version, but I am still betting on a free mod version, just like HL1. Valve is too smart, and they will go by their original success, and stick to that model as much as possible. Which is to offer as much bang for the buck as they can, and more and more people will buy your game(s).

The trap of making people buy more and more versions/expansions/addons of a game is what so many companys fall into. BF1942 is a prime current example. Rather than release updates to their current game, keeping people interested, building a consolidated userbase to spur more growth; they are releasing addon packs, which when it comes down to a multiplayer game, just alienates the userbases from eachother, and therefor won't spur growth besides the initial surge.

its pretty simple. Too bad most game companies dont get it. well, that and bf still doesnt have a linux server, but yeah.

sure, cs could be considered a "seperate game" but HL's wealth of mods is what has kept the game installed on peoples computers for this long of a time. The ability to try something new if you get tired of one mod, is the great part of HL. Then, you can go back later to the mod you got tired of playing at a later time.

Remember, this is a computer game, not a console like Playstation 2, which was tragically underproduced to the point that only people who camped in their cars outside kmart with chips and old hair metal band cd's could buy the product before it sold out. For Sony, the problem was that they didn't have enough of some part of the PS2 (I think). I really doubt any of the components of Half-Life 2 in-box are so technologically advanced that it will be hard for them to produce enough. Let's see....CD, CD case, instruction booklet, registration card....and maybe a coupon for other games they've made or endorse.

All I'm saying is...don't worry. You'll almost definitely get your copy quickly.
thats a very good point! like with the ps2 they need to actually manufacture the hardware, which can take time, but here all they need to do is press cd's and stuuff em in boxes.

i would never opt to get it from steam though, i would rather have a hard copy, unless, err, you would get it off steam in an ISO-type format so u can burn it off onto some cheap CDs. steam is OK only if the price is attractive....but then again, youre giving your bank card details to them.....hmmm.....maybe not steam....

true, but if its cheaper than the store, and that money is going directly and completely to valve vs some middleman and publisher...

I'd rather give my money to valve.

Seeing as the HL2 video from E3 showed a driveable car with a mounted turret (of sorts) on it... I'll assume this will be possible for mods as well. Somebody make a warthog, eh? :)

I wonder if they'll let you get it a day early if you buy it off Steam or some other thing to get you to buy it off of Steam instead of a store?
I'm curious about that as well. Assuming that CS:CZ will be available over Steam, the success or failure of that launch will likely determine how many people try for HL2 over Steam. Good user reviews = more people using it (obviously). It won't take many horror stories, however, to significantly lower the appeal. Hopefully it goes off without a hitch.

                      Lestat, 2 things.

I definitely agree with giving my money to valve rather than sierra, after all, they created the game goddamit.

Secondly maybe I went a bit far saying CS2 and TF2 will be standalone games at25 pounds, 50 dollars whatever.

But you have to remember CS2 and TF2 WONT be mods. Theyll be entire games, therefore the devlopment costs will be much higher than TFC or CS.

From that standpoint I would say TF2 and CS2 will definitely be add on packs. Priced at 20 quid they usually are in over here in UK.

I am betting that cs2 at least will be a mod, IE you wont have to pay for it if you already own HL2. But then again, who knows. I doubt valve will publicly say how they are going to handle that any time soon.

I say get he horror stories about steam out htere now, so i cna hog hte bw to my self.

I wouldl be shocked if valve made cs2 retail only tbh they do seem to be reasonably community minded I would saythe designers of cs2 are the poeple to ask about it since they will be the ones who own the mod... A rule o f thumb test, HL2 code is being worked upon n is nearly done... The cs deisgners do or do not have acess to this code now? they are or are not working for valve.. they are or are not going to mod form scrach or develop in house,. Answer those qs n u would have a better chance of guessing whether cs2 is retail only or what...

valve will probably off cs2 at a VERY reduced price provided you purchase HL2 FIRST! i would agree to that, cmon, its all about making a little extra money. say $5 (to u americans) extra for cs2, means big money to valve.

and i really hope valve will control CS2, rather than have the community create complete shit out of it. like now: 24/7 dust, iceworld, rats etc etc....i would hate to see maps like dust (unrealistic, crap maps) become the mainstream for cs2 players.

valve should put their foot down and create maps with ATMOSPHERE, REALISM, BALANCE, and FUN.

like a twin towers map, or one where u have to blow up not a bunch of FUCKING CRATES, but a bus full of people....much more realistic.

Ghengis,Valve bought the rights for CS when it went retail. They also hired Gooseman who is working on CS2 I believe.

So CS2 is a Valve game.

I think CS2 will be a single player campaign w/ multiplayer.

Can u imabgine the possibilities with the Source engine - im really interested to see what the scenarios are going to be like -im sure theyll blow us away.
