    Newell on Half-Life 2

GamingNEXT interviewed Gabe Newell, VALVe's Software's Managing Director and head of Half-Life 2 production. In it, he talks about the different physics and renderings of HL2, and a little about anti-cheating.
GamingNEXT - Finally, how user friendly is this engine and will modders be able to create unique environments and maps that made the first Half-Life last so long?

Gabe Newell - We learned a lot through our experiences with TFC, Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, and so on. This engine is much more MOD'able (if that's a word) than Half-Life 1 was, and the tool set has been improved a lot. We'll also be releasing a bunch of material to help MOD teams get their existing work up and running on the new engine as a starting point.
It's definitely an important read if you care about Half-Life 2. The bits and pieces we learn about modding Half-Life 2 are awesome, and I can't wait for news about Counter-Strike 2 (it must be coming!).

That was a very nice interview. I wish he went into the anti-cheat features a little more though. Just saying "It will be part of the multiplayer components" left me saying "Oh".

Half-life 2 is going to be so cool. Usually I just borrow games from someone else and play it a bit. This game DESERVES my money.

One cavet: I saw the Half-life 2 movies from Gamespot, and there still seems to be little bit of a clipping problem. But hey, you can't be totally perfect.

solgae the game isnt completed, all those little bugs will surely be fixed by time it reaches us. What do you think this is Battlefield:1942 where they release patches before the game itself?

HL:2 will defintly revolutionize the gaming world, just like Half-Life.

Yep, I can see HL2 break every record there is.

Newell wants a Networked Fighting Game?!? Dude, how about someone implements BF1942 on the HL2 engine. Now that would be worthwhile. I want to see people's facial expressions change from stupid to stupified as I approach with the B17 bomber... and 64 players for more deathmatching action.

lol, that might actually make a good game. IE decent net code, linux servers, voice comm, I could go on and on...

BF could have exploded, but EA/dice (probably more EA than dice) dont get it at all.

but yeah, I think a bad ass arena fighter would be fun as all hell, esp if you could have dedicated servers. Imagine having one map that is nothing but one 20 player bar brawl, breaking bottles, chairs, tables over peoples backs, crap like that.

              sounds like fun to me.

Theres soooo many half-life mods outside the perimeter of the ones that come with the CS retail (gearbox, opposing force, Dod) that it would be allmost pointless to create any more mods other than CS. Hell, I'm even questioning if they should make another tema fortress. An instance of the over saturated half-life mod communtiy is this little website: http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~monkeystri...p?action=news

                  *sigh*

I'm still waiting on the answer to the question that's on all the mappers' minds:

Will the new Hammer editor still support all those wonderful prefabs that were so important to HL1 map making?

That actually does sound really cool. Freedom is imporant in online games. It makes it possible for new players to explore and enjoy without getting beaten up too badly. CS has a great mix of that but arena stuff would be even better.

I've more humble hopes fro the HL2 engine. I just hope to see a mod that is nothing more than a drinking contest at the bar.

More like will we finally be able to bind entities to each other? Think of the possibilities... tanks with gun turrets... heh...

prefabs? only absolute beginers use prefabs.
