    Hello guys!!!

I downloaded CS 1.6 today but have the same problem like most people in this forum. I want to ask you about.....

in map steam/steamCache/...cstrike all maps like "models", "sound",

    "sprites".....are empty!!!!

Is those map content will be downloaded when game start first time

or it will download every time I will run CS???

I dont know that because my computer freezing vid every trying

    to start the game!!!

    Please let me know it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    !!!!!!!!!!!
those sounds/models and other files are stored in a cache file, they are locked so it would be difficult to use your own custom sounds/models etc. thats why so many ppl are whining that steam will cause the death of the custom sound/modelling community. models/sounds/maps/sprites that CS doesnt exclusively use, may be put in your normal '\cstrike\models' directories. ie things that are required by the SERVER not the CLIENT to run. things like custom admin mod sounds, a custom map, map specific sprites, overviews, TARGA sky maps etc.

steam will only download those items once, and every time you connect to server, client will download additional files and libraries to avoid 'hacking' :o

those additional files are probably less than 500kbytes in size.

      vegas...realistic???

I didn't know that there were a bunch of terrorists trying to blow up a little sphynx in an alleyway full of trash for no good reason...not to mention the slot sounds reverberating in my brain.

Paranisi was almost as confusing - at least they fixed that - btw paranisi works great for me too, mike - no lag/crash.

storm, torn, survivor, backalley...some very small changes would make them sooo much more playable maps...well maybe not backalley :[

QUESTION: What is the latest update number of Half-Life?? I thought it still was 1.1.1.0.

I just started Steam & it's trying to update BOTH CS & HL atm. I found this weird so I started the Sierra Update program. It aaid that my version of HL (1.1.1.0.) was out of date but that there wasen't any available updates to download. & then it started searching for a new update again... The thing is, I played 1.5 with my buddy via Internet like 2 days ago! Something is ****ed up

Edit: And according to the Games list in Steam, all my games (I have subscribed to all of 'em) needs to be updated but then that weird download flashing thingie happens! :) Aw man )

well cmon, vegas is a damn more realistic than some crates being blown up in the middle of nowhere, dust is supposed to be a deserted village. i never got that feeling, even when playing it for the first time. piranesi builds upon that fact, piranesi does look like an old abandoned part of a castle. lets say vegas is set in a realistic location which requires more skill than say dust, to navigate around the map.

storm, torn, survivor, backalley. i have no problems with them at all. true, they are not your average 'deathmatch arena maps for newbies', they do require a certain skill to play. and dont even start telling me they cause 'lag', many ppl dont even know what 'lag' is and if u play the game without searching for something to whine over, u wont even notice it. (btw im not talking about you, but in general).

well, cs 1.5 uses HL version 1.1.1.0, the steam version (cs 1.6b) uses HL version 1.1.1.1. this is HL.EXE gets updated every time u run steam cs, so its version can change without notice.

dont run any sierra updater or anything, steam should update it for you. btw what version numbers are your steam? im using steam ver 1.0.0.0.

All the standard maps-srites-sounds-mdls-ect that cs comes with are stored in 1 BIG compressed file. If you want to run a custom map on a 1.6b server you should be able to put it into that empty maps folder, but you can't edit or replace any standard part of cs1.6b because you can't get to it.

In other words - no taking the new knife model out or playing the new aztec on a 1.5 server, the new eye candy would crash the server anyway.

Everything is in the gcache.gcf - I think.

the gcf contents are stored in it using a system called "Guralp Compressed Format". its checksum is updated on each CS run as well.

Hmm my HL uses v46/1.1.1.0 That's what it says in the down right corner of the main menu. Steam Version I don't know but STEAM is really weird right now, as it's updating all my seven games at the same time, where each download lies around 200 kB/S according to steam itself (I'm looking in the Monitor feature). I think that's kinda cool for a 0.5 MBit ADSL But I have that update flash as I call it so every 2 seconds the downloads disappear & steam says that it's not updating anything. & so it goes around & around & around... Forever it seems

Where can I see the Steam version? The platform is 4 & the game is 10 I believe.

My only big complaint about those maps is that their gameplay doesn't flow very well. Vegas simply annoys the hell outa me.

Just because a map can be learned in minutes does NOT make it a deathmatch arena (eg d2, aztec, ALL the custom CAL maps ect...) (dust isn't even part of this conversation)

the steam monitor is wrong, very wrong, i suggest use something like 'NetPeeker' to show u an accurate picture of how much steam is using. mine isnt updating anything now at all. onc it updates all the games, it shouldnt touch anything again. try unsubscribing to everything apart from CS, see if that stops the other updating themselves.

i suppose i just want a map to be believable thats all. since i really want to get right into the game, thinking im actually in it, not sitting at my computer while some coloured triangles are drawn on the screen by my video card etc etc. i find the game so much more enjoyable when i believe im actually in a real place (torn, survivor, piranesi), unfortuantely, dust1/2, aztec, current inferno, cobble, dont give me the feeling im in the game, but more like im playing a computer game. its just me, shame the majority of csers dont think like i do :*(

when 2 AK's and an AWP round a corner that I'm guarding I could give a shit how pretty the wall next to me is.

im afraid i dont think that shallow about the game. like i said, i dont see the game as a bunch of pretty pixels, i see it as an ENVIRONMENT I AM IN. is that clearer now? i dont go around thinking, wow, thats a pretty wall, wonder how the mapper made it etc., i see the map as one whole.
