Go ahead and test your cheats against VAC kiddies. I'll be happy to watch you get your first 1 day ban, then a longer one... then a longer one still, until you finally figure out that it sucks being banned from CS for a month, and play with a clean install. :)
some 8 year old n00b cheater
Newbie:"W00t im uber 1337 my 1 month ban is done, time to be uber 1337 and hack again!"
*clicks server*
Half Life: "You have been baned for 2 years"
Newbie: "DaM. now i need to wait 2 years before i can start hacking again!"
-----------------------------------
Hmmm i think i'm going to like this new system

this is what is sad about the perception of VAC. it's not some cure-all, end-all solution for cheating. if someone gets caught hacking by the VAC, they are banned for the day. so they uninstall the hacks until the next version of OGC comes out, the one that doesnt get caught until they release a new VAC, and maybe the cheaters are more careful this time and uninstall and wait for the new OGC again. this hack comes out with new versions QUICKLY, and valve releases a new module like every 2 weeks if we're lucky. if the cheater gets caught and banned for say, a month, he just gets a new cdkey. hell, most software places offer exchanges for the same piece of software. thats (theoretically infinite) new cd-keys right there, for only the initial investment of, what, $10? $20? all the VAC is is a cushion for newbies to suspect people of hacking less, and a deterrant against those same newbies who think that they really just might get caught and cant afford to ask mom to buy them a new copy of hl. it also opens up a new stream of revenue for valve, as new copies of half-life WILL get sold as some cheaters get banned.
VAC will still catch them if they are h4x0ring, so it doesn't matter if they yoink another CD-Key.
yes, this will reduce cheating. on the whole, that is a good thing. but this is something that i've said before: false positives DO happen and HAVE happened, and making solid bans really, REALLY messes with league play, with the potential that actual outcomes of matches are changed as a result of some memory error causing a false ban, and a loss of a starter.Comment

As the current system goes, this is true. But, as soon as steam becomes the norm, and valve can also start releasing dll updates/modifications etc to clients frequently along w/ vac updates, it should be pretty effective. This is what valve has been saying all along, which is that the anti cheat wont be complete till the full steam implementation is brought on line across the board.
at least, thats the theory ; P

Along with the VAC update today, Steam was updated to platform version 6. Perhaps not everyone is having problems with the last two platform releases, but I've seen several on servers so far, so I thought I'd help out here...
Steam.exe has been taking as many CPU cycles as it can on my computer, running above 90% usage. As you can guess, if Steam is competing this heavily with HL.exe for CPU cycles, your FPS will go straight down the toilet.
Basically, open task manager (if you have a modern version of windows), select "steam.exe" from the list of processes, and drop the priority setting all the way down. This will fix the horrible FPS stuttering that some people have been seeing.Comment
