Yes they bypass the sound card, completely.

Why would I buy them? Firstly, the headphones come with a soundcard included. I need a new soundcard as mine is all jacked up and I can't play cs because both the left and right channel comes through both left and right speakers. Secondly, I love counter strike and would love to sport these boss ass headphones at a lan party. Thirdly my cheap headphones are busted up. Fourthly, people pay well over 100 dollars for a pair of shoes, I think that a piece of electronic equipment that will bring me HOURS of enjoyment, allowing me to better experience my past time is well worth 100 bucks.

I could come up with a few more reasons, but you're probably too busy downloading the latest "50-cent" track, to read them.

      Rock on!
      nice post

wait a minute: they use the USB port, does that mean they bypass the soundcard entirely? like, is a game supports EAX, and you have an EAX soundcard (like an audigy, for example) will the sound coming from the headphones be EAX 3D?
im not sure but i thought i read somewhere that eax has to do with the software, not the hardware. on another note, i dont think eax would make much of a difference with headphones, as apposed to speakers

how though? i mean, you can hear the game sounds through them, right? like the gunfire and footsteps, etc. those are being prompted by the game, but then created by the soundcard. so, at some point the sound data has to pass through a sound card, or thered be no sound. or, do these somehow generate sounds/ process music IN the USB port?

also, EAX has to be coded into the game, but needs a hardware solution to process it. so, even if a game has EAX, you need an EAX soundcard to hear it.

you see that big sort of oval thing thats connected to the cord on the dsp-500's? that's the soundcard it uses. the dsp-500's plug into a USB port, and all sound is processed through there

I doubt they have the quality of a audigy in that "big sort of oval thing" regardless. I thought about getting a pair of mic/headp combo but I opted to buy nice headphones and a good seperate mic so I can use the headphones anywhere and not go around lookin like a pilot.

the headphones themselves are good quality. example: an audigy doesnt mean anything if your speakers are crap, does it? no.

                  This was at Planet H-L

"Valve, creators of Counter-Strike and Half-Life(R), and Plantronics, a leading manufacturer of computer headsets, today unveiled a custom Counter-Strike headset." Um OK one thing. When did Valve *create* CS? I thought Gooseman did. hmmm funny.

I do every thing on my laptop, like play CS but I cant use a head-set because the sound card isn't full duplex. If you don't have a full duplex sound car you can't use voice com. I found this out the hard way after I brought the .80 Plantronics head set then did some research to find out the problem. Every time I clicked on the H-L voice utility setup a little box would pop up saying that it could not find the Mic. mute. So after reading the specs. on this new head set it clearly says "you do not need a sound card." So finally I'll be able to use my voice instead of typing every thing.

                  P.S.

I really do not like the color of the head set is there another color you can get it in???

i would buy it but i already have alien ware-quality speakers and you cant plug in headphones in them..so what would be the point of having speakers if you have headphones..

I have both headphones and speakers, and I use my headphones more often. I bought an extension cord and splitter at radio shack for my sound systems, It plugs into the sound card and then you can plug your speakers and headphones in at the same time so that you can turn your speakers off if you're playing cs, and you can't hear your headphones if you're using your speakers.
