Trion Hit with Layoffs - Official Numbers are Unconfirmed

A story that is still developing says that Trion Worlds has been hit with a series of layoffs today. Initial reports said that the number of affected employees was as high as 80% of the total work force, though Trion has said those numbers are exaggerated.

Though still unconfirmed, it is being said that the San Diego studio was hit the hardest. That studio is where Defiance was developed, the latest free to play MMO from the studio that has significant ties to the SyFy series of the same name.

Trion has issued the following statement concerning the layoffs:

"To best position Trion in a rapidly changing industry, we have reorganized our teams and are expanding our free to play offering. With Defiance, we delivered a great game that more than one million gamers registered to play and continue to enjoy. As we progress from launch to ongoing development of the game, we are adjusting our staffing levels to deliver new content and improved features. RIFT, and our other titles in development, were unaffected by these changes. We are very much looking forward to the free to play release of RIFT and are excited by the other new titles currently in development."

As noted by IGN, this is the second wave of layoffs to hit the studio. Last December, a number of employees were laid off from the Rift development team. Rift, as you may recall, will be going free-to-play next month.
