Oknytt Bringing Swedish Folklore to Life as Point and Click Adventure Game

A new upstart development studio, Nemoria Entertainment, is readying the release of its first digital title. Slated for release in the second quarter of 2013 (typically April-June), Oknytt is a point-and-click adventure title that will bring some fairy tale Swedish folklore to life.

Oknytt is a point-and-click adventure game where the player takes the role of a small seemingly insignificant creature, leading it through a dark world riddled with obstacles to help it find a place to belong, a purpose for its existence. The game takes place in a Norse medieval world and contains beings and areas inspired by Swedish folklore.

The gameplay is comprised of a mix of classic puzzle solving and manipulation of parts of the environment around the player. This is done by the help of runes that trigger different events depending on which scene the player is currently in. Our goal has been to create unique gameplay mechanics designed to stimulate the player’s curiosity and need for exploration. Through these mechanics the player becomes the force that drives the game’s narrative, by figuring out how these mechanics can be used to let the player progress through the story, access new characters or create new solutions to problems.

Our vision is a game that has a local and unique feel to it, bringing in many elements and areas from Norse folklore. The game’s art direction was created to give the various backgrounds and characters a very old and dark fairy tale like design, and we have been greatly inspired by the Swedish painter John Bauer’s work throughout the development of the game.

Development of the game has been underway for about a year, during which time it won the Swedish Game Concept Challenge of 2012. Nemoria Entertainment is super Indie at the moment, consisting of just four team members.
