Oh good, I was beginning to think we were going to miss out on another next-gen console rumor this week. The latest one concerns the next Xbox and how the console will require a persistent online connection in order to lock out used games from being played on another system.
Edge is reporting from "sources with first-hand experience" on the next Microsoft console that the system will have a much broader online presence. However, they also say that the next system will allow for the purchase and playback of 50GB capacity Blu-ray discs still. These discs will come with activation codes that will be a one use code, thus eliminating the resell of these titles.
Beyond this, their sources say that the rumored specs for the console are accurate. As you may recall, these specs include an eight-core AMD x64 CPU at 1.6GHz, DirectX 11 based 800MHz based video card, and 8GB of DDR3 memory. Given the increased push for online gaming and downloadable titles, it is speculated that the included hard drive will be larger than anything in this current generation.
In addition, a new "more reliably responsive" Kinect will ship alongside the next Xbox system. Sony is also readying a more improved camera based system. It is expected that Sony will discuss all of this during their February 20 event. As it is, developers have said that Sony has the edge when it comes to the hardware at work inside of the next-gen consoles.
