Frank Gibeau, the head honcho at Electronic Arts states that they will not publish games that are solely single-player affairs. Every game from them must have an online component.
In case you're worried that this means no Mirror's Edge 2, keep in mind that "online applications" is a very general term. The first Mirror's Edge had online leaderboards which more than likely fit into this general category. However, this may mean that some studios may view this as something that forces them to add in a competitive multiplayer component into a game that rightfully shouldn't have one.
