  • Sony Lost out on Limbo Over IP Rights Requirement

The hit indie title, Limbo, could have been available on the PSN first if it wasn't for Sony insisting on the IP rights to the title. SCE admitted that they lost out on the deal and subsequently the right to release the game first because of this demand.

Pete Smith, Executive Producer at Sony Computer Entertainment:

"There are obvious benefits to keeping it, but also to giving it up: you're way more likely to get the deal," he said. "Remember: 100 percent of nothing is nothing. A publisher is much more likely to commit to marketing and merchandising if they own the IP.

"Sometimes all we want is protection so [devs] don't make a game, finish it then go to one of our rivals. We look at IP on a case by case basis. With a bit of common sense, you can find common ground."

Developer Playdead instead signed a deal with Microsoft, releasing the game in July 2010 on XBLA. A year later is when it finally released on PC and PSN.
