Wii U Retail Games to be Sold Digitally at Launch

When Nintendo finally releases the Wii U, gamers everywhere can expect to see retail releases also available as digital releases. Nintendo's president, Satoru Iwata announced these plans today via a financial results briefing for the company's fiscal year ending March 2012.

For the Wii U, we will start the digital download sales of packaged software that I just discussed, so our consumers can choose either the packaged version or the digital download version of the same software from day one of the Wii U’s launch.

Much in the same way current retail outlets sell download codes for the 3DS, the same will happen for the Wii U. This allows for the individual retailers to set the prices and offer up their own discounts and promotions.
