  • Halo 4 Details Revealed for Single Player and Multiplayer

News is starting to trickle in from all over concerning the upcoming Halo 4 from 343 Industries. IGN has a good round up of some the best news, including word on both the game's single player story and multiplayer components, including a bit of co-op news.

The main story kicks off four years after the events in Halo 3. Master Chief is woken up by Cortana (who has received a bit of a makeover) after detecting some Covenant intruders on board. Beyond that, not much is really known about the single player. Why are the Covenant there? What's happened in those four years? How much ass will Master Chief kick? You'll just have to wait and see. Oh, and there is still four player co-op for the entire single player campaign again.

New weapons have not yet been revealed but old favorites such as the Covenant carbine and plasma pistol are back. They join up with the normal sniper rifle, assault rifle, battle rifle, magnum, rocket launcher, shotgun, ans assault carbine.

343 Industries is dubbing the Halo 4 multiplayer as Infinity (Microsoft recently registered haloinfinity.net and haloinifnitymultiplayer.net). In a weird way, Infinity will have ties to the game's main campaign. However, it does explain why Red is constantly at war with Blue. Simply put, it's part of their military training in a simulator. This also means that the multiplayer won't include playable Elites.

But how's about the multiplayer in general?

Another interesting change to Halo 4 is loadouts. Rather than everyone rolling out with the same weapons online, players bring customized gear into battle. Everyone packs a primary and secondary weapon, armor abilities (including active camo, jetpack, and hologram) grenade type (plasma grenade is still unconfirmed). Weapons still appear around the map, of course, but they appear in random spots via drop pods. In another interesting minor tweak, the respawn in Team Slayer is instantaneous rather than reliant on a clock.

Oh, and since Chief vanished, Spartans have since learned to run; sprinting is an innate ability in everyone. Players can also use Forerunner Vision to peek through walls, Batman style. The X-ray vision upgrade is an armor ability you'll equip. Other abilities are unlockable via Spartan Points, the currency fueling the in-game economy. Points unlock additional Ops missions, armor abilities, and cosmetic upgrades.

One last interesting thing to note here is that there will be a separate co-op mode called Spartan Ops. This separate story-driven campaign is for up to four players, includes a number of objectives that must be completed, and its own set of story cinematics. The best part is that 343 plans to add in new Spartan Ops campaigns on a weekly basis for months after the game's initial release! The only bad news is that this game mode replaces a dedicated Firefight mode.
