GamesBeat Interview at Call of Duty: XP Event - 60FPS is Part of Success

One thing I wanted to pull out of this interview, that keeps coming up, is the 60 framers per second of Modern Warfare. Is Modern Warfare better utilized on the console because it can run at 60 frames per second? Is this really the "secret" to the Modern Warfare success or is this just a marketing move to go against Battlefield 3 and its 30 frames per second on console?

You can listen here from Karl Troedsson, from DICE and makers of Battlefield 3, on how 30 frames per second and innovation of a game is the key to success.

Now I am just getting annoyed by the 30-60 fps debate. For a very long time I was a console player, especially of Call of Duty (in the dark ages post 2142), and yes, the game (CoD4) at the time had among the best graphics anywhere to go along with the high framerate that is essential for a twitch shooter. I did enjoy the fast paced gameplay, and still do (although now on CoD4 PC). However, considering how much IW/Activision is trying to push this small fact as the "secret" to a better game shows how much DICE has them against the ropes. Of course, the argument isn't even valid since BF3 isn't even trying to be a twitch shooter reliant on maximum FPS-at all. While both sides have been childish in their attacks on the other, at least EA has made some valid points- Activision is just trying to get everyone worked up. Sad thing is it will likely work for the console players, who clearly do not understand that their hardware is outdated, and just assume that 30 FPS means an inferior game.

The secret to success is use a 5+ year old engine where 60 fps is easier to maintain...

Almost all engines in one form or another are modified or based on older engines, there is only so much you can do currently with computer technology and EA is spinning it (as with Crysis and now BF3) as if its the defining factor of a game. For me the defining factor of a game is the feel of the game, does it play well and do I have fun playing it, frankly CoD/MW has constantly delivered. Battlefield on the other hand has had one thing that has had me come back year after year and that is the large battlefield which is not something I felt, not all of you may agree, BFBC2 has delivered. Pretty game though.

I think its a little more than spin. Yes Frostbite is based off of other engines, but its re-design and other added features the other engines did not have, as well as the combining of ANT to the system makes it very different. Just reading all the analysis and tech papers earlier this year from the DICE team on what the Frostbite 2.0 engine is and how they made it shows that its very well polished and an engine of its own.

Yes, EA marketing is doing a bang up job about it as well, I do agree with that, but I think its more justified than the "We have 60fps and thats better." that we are seeing from Activision.
