Are $60 Games Threatened by $1 Mobile Apps?

This seems to be the concern of Epic's Mike Capps. He feels as though the $1 mobile apps could "damage the next generation of console games."

"I'm more worried that you can get a really good 99 cent game that occupies you for hours and hours on end and how that impacts $60 SKUs.

"I'm not as worried about how it impacts Infinity Blade – I think there will always be room for a premium SKU on a mobile platform. And I think as more buyers [enter the mobile market], there will be more people who are willing to spend a bit more for quality.

"But I do worry about what it means for the next generation of console games. Are people really going to want to spend $60 on a game?... It's not a sustainable business model. I'm not sure how it all ends up."

Similar sentiments were echoed to GI.biz from EA Sports' Andrew Wilson last week, saying that where will come a time where consumers will simply not pay $60 for a game. Capps had strong opinions regarding Netflix on Xbox Live. He said that services such as Netflix posed a threat to games like Shadow Complex because "if you already bought Netflix, you have tons and tons of awesome content that's bite sized in 1.5 to 2 hour chunks."

Interesting viewpoints there. However, if he feels as though the $1 games are such a huge threat to $60 titles on consoles, perhaps it's time to examine why this is. Consumers don't want to spend that much money on one title when they can theoretically pick up $60, $1 titles for the same amount. Could this be the return of the $50 or sub-$50 console game? Don't hold your breath.

When you can buy a $1 game and get more enjoyment, creativity, and longivity out of it than a $60 title, yeah, they should be worried.

Actually, we are looking from the wrong angle. In reality, $60 will become $70 because (most)consolers are suckers. When 360 released, they tried the new $60 model and everyone bought into it, had they not, than it would still be $50. In the end those $1 games will be $10.

Not surprising. They have very few original ideas, so they spend more and more money on making their product look better than the competition.
Hollywood have the exact same problem.

Thats a very good point as well. A lot of "$1" games are not that price anymore. Most "good" quality games seem to run from $3 to $7 dollars. Maybe its not impossible that those will jump to $10.

Still very cheap compared to what you are getting and like Vreki said, the Hollywood syndrome is in gaming right now as well.

Well if you happen to buy a horrible $1 app then what your out only a dollar and most of the time you can get a refund. Hopefully this will bring the $60 games back down to $50.
