Article: DICE: BF3 Will Have the Largest Maps We've Ever Made

    From the Battlefield 3 Blog:

There have been a lot of technical details regarding the new Frostbite 2.0 engine, which powers Battlefield 3. But we’ve never gotten anything concrete, for instance, what is the engine capable of doing when it comes to multiplayer maps? We know the maps made with the previous version of Frostbite (1.5, in Bad Company 2), were somewhat limited and a lot smaller than those found in Battlefield 2.

We can now exhale with relief, as DICE’s Patrick Bach has revealed in a recent interview with Norweigan game magazine Gamer, saying that Battlefield 3 will feature the biggest maps DICE has ever made.
“The game is still early in development, but I can tell you that Battlefield 3 will have the largest maps we have ever made”

Bach went on, pointing out that BF3 will support 64 players on PC, and it will be possible to have both jets, helicopters, tanks and infantry combat on a single map.

The more details are revealed, the more excited we get about Battlefield 3, and we’ve yet to have any concrete multiplayer details. For that, expect the big unveiling at E3 in a few months.

So is this good news? Does bigger = better? Some have asked if this is comparing maps from Bad Company or from the entire franchise? I think it would be safe to assume the entire franchise myself, but what is your take?

Yes, BUT, you have to remember that right now, this is just my guess, they are trying to get the console crowd on board as well as to put an end to the "BC3 = BF3" comments.

I just hope that when they rebuilded the whole engine from scratch (according to what they said) they have bothered with pc graphics optimization and it isnt just another heavy port from consoles!

Well being on a map where your not constantly turning around to avoid the edge of the map when in a jet would be a bonus.

Bigger maps doesn't always mean fun fun fun. Take Joint Operations for instance. It was not fun to travel 5 or more minutes to a base only to get killed and have to do it all over again.

I hope they don't cop out and not have any large scale urban maps in multiplayer, I can already hear them complaining about not being able to have large buildings destructible.
