War Tapes: The Sounds Of Battlefield 3

The award-winning team behind Battlefield: Bad Company 2's terrific sound design is back. Led by audio director Stefan Strandberg, DICE got up close and personal with the sounds of battle during a live military exercise. Their recordings and subsequent lessons learned could make Battlefield 3 the most realistic sounding war experience in gaming.

Watch the video below to hear how DICE plans to make a great-sounding series even better.

    <embed src="http://c.brightcove.com/services/viewer/federated_f9?&width=100%25&height=100%25&flashID=m yExperience&bgcolor=%23FFFFFF&height%22=100%25&pla yerID=708657991001&isVid=true&%40videoPlayer=79251 5005001&isUI=true&dynamicStreaming=true&wmode=tran sparent&autoStart=&debuggerID=" width="550" height="309"></embed>

After watching this video, it still amazes me the people that say Bad Company 2 doesn't sound realistic. I think Battlefield 3 is going to sound very deep and emersive. What do you look for in sounds?

Its not that Bad Company 2 sounds unrealistic its just that there is always too much background noise and interference that you never really understand what sounds are coming from where. Its like watching Transformers 2 compared to Black Hawk Down, you dont always need things happening to create an atmosphere.

Dont quote me on this directly but I think the Audio quality of BF3 will be roughly double that of BC2. If everything they are saying about FB2 is legit then we are really gonna be blown away come this fall.

Nobody does sound better than dice and EA, those guys have this down to an extreme science.

So you think its too many sounds?

Like Garand said, there will be more, but its also suppose to be better focused than BC2 so you can really tell where the sound is coming from. Would that be better?

bfbc2 had great sound but lots of stuff was "scripted" , i mean it was from the map, not really someone shooting, you would see the navy ships shooting at a great distance and stuff like that. but what it seems, is as bf3 will be mutch bigger there wont be needed "ambient" fake shooting sounds to create a ambience because there will allready be lots of action

I agree. A bit too much ambient noise and poor sound direction. From that video, that seems to be their main focus of improvement.

There is a bit too much ambient noise at times, but I usually don't have too much trouble hearing where sounds are coming from if I'm listening and trying to be quiet/stealthy. If I'm running around like Rambo with guns blazing I'm not going to notice particular sounds no matter the clarity.

I can't wait to hear how BF3 sounds though. I thought BC2 was a massive improvement over 2142 despite it being too noisy at times.

Yep, maybe too much ambiant noise in BC2. 64 player action will make those expandable.

Now, I just hope some sound related stuff are not going to be included in the game because they are realistic.

I gota admit when i first played BC the sounds were frign amazing compared to bf2.I wish the assult rifle were a bit louder and agressive sounding tho. :/

They must bring back commo rose so we can choose what we yell on the battlefield tho.

That auto yell thing has to go. Yes, I use it too, but its not right to throw a grenade in a house just so that everyone will shout so you know its not empty.

That or make it so YOU hear yourself shouting.

Either way, its not very nice.

If you want to talk about stealth how about being sniper ,settling down finding a nice elite spot.Only to have ten guys spawning off you with m60s and rockets and flamethrowers giving away your position.

                        but thats OT lol

I disagree. All the ambient noises in BC2 are very quiet actually. Unlike other games, the sound engine always picks only one or couple of sounds and loudens them up depending on what's happening.
