Riccitiello: Battlefield 3 out in second half 2011

MrChris_CJ brought us this article from vg247.com:

EA CEO John Riccitiello has confirmed Battlefield 3 will launch in the final six months of 2011.

Not much is known about the much-wanted DICE shooter, although an online beta, included with copies of Medal of Honor, will kick off at some point this year.

A talk on the game is set to take place at GDC in March.

“We’ve got a couple of third-party games in the form of Crysis 2 and Bulletstorm, and then our big focus is Battlefield 3 in the second half of the year,” Riccitiello told IG when asked how EA is going to take on Activision and Call of Duty in 2011.

“I’d be shocked if we didn’t take a notch out of [Activision],” he continued.

Riccitiello added that BF3 would be “designed to be the one that is the big leap forward; the one that is going to help a lot” in competing with CoD.

Despite talk on the title ramping up, there’s been no formal announcement of Battlefield 3 yet.

EA told VG247 last year that it would not disturb DICE and the game’s development “with marketing and PR”.

Well, what are your thoughts on this release date? Does it seem a bit fast or "on schedule"? Will this competition with Call of Duty have things added or changed in Battlefield 3?

Vehicles are going to be perks you earn during a match, 5 kill streak is earns you a humvee.

Second half of 2011? Oh, he means in time for the Christmas retail orgy...

“We’ve got a couple of third-party games in the form of Crysis 2 and Bulletstorm, and then our big focus is Battlefield 3 in the second half of the year,”

What that quote tells me is that BF3 is low on the tasking order and they'll crank it up and shove it out the door finished or not in order to sell units at Christmas.

If it was DICE making all those other titles, I would agree, but this is EA stating their order of marketing focus, not game design.

It could still be rushed out the door and going by trends of all publishers, it will be.

You won't get your hands on it this year. Maybe Christmas if you're lucky. But then I think it's going to be a bit of a let down tbh, I'm not sure how long EA can let DICE develop a finished product without hurrying them and forcing them to produce a rushed bug filled disaster again.

No jets and helicopters = disaster.
Not at least the magic number of total land vehicles in the maps = disaster. (Magic number = max players / 3.5 *rounded to nearest even #*)
Not at least the magic number of armour in a map = yep, disaster. (Magic number = max players / 5 *rounded up to nearest even #*)

DICE developers have revealed a few new details on the upcoming Battlefield 3 on Twitter. Lead Designer David Goldfarb has allayed fears that the next Battlefield will be a console port, saying that while the game won’t be exclusive to the PC, the PC version of the game is getting extra attention. More news has emerged on the game’s system specs, too. Battlefield 3 is designed to run with DirectX 11, and won’t run at all on Windows XP.

Responding to questions on Twitter, Goldfarb said the game “will not be exclusive. We are putting special effort into the pc version, even for us, it’s extraordinary.” This is good news for those who were worried that DICE’s success on the consoles with Battlefield: Bad Company 2 coul make PC version of the game becoming a lower priority. it looks as though the opposite is true.

Meanwhile another DICE dev, Johann Andersson dropped a few details on the system specs that will be needed to run the game, saying that “Frostbite 2 is primarily developed for DX11. XP & DX9 is _not_ supported, 64-bit OS is recommended. Lots of time to upgrade if you havent!” This will probably mean an upgrade for many. Are you still using Windows XP? Would you upgrade for Battlefield 3?
