Vivendi Says Treyarch "Done Better" and IW Restructured

    Shacknews has this to report:

Call of Duty: Black Ops developer Treyarch has bested series creator Infinity Ward, IGN reports Activision parent company Vivendi declared last week. IW will get to fire back, though, as it has finished restructing after its major staffing losses this year.

"The Treyarch studio, which made this year's game, has done better than what the Infinity Ward studio could achieve a year ago," said CEO Jean-Bernard Levy at the Morgan Stanley TMT Conference on Friday. He's certainly right sales-wise, as Cod Blops broke the entertainment industry-wide launch day and five-day sales records set by Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 last year. Cold Blops sold-through over $650 million in five days after launching on November 9. <!--more-->

Levy also reveals that "We have reconstructed Infinity Ward," adding that the company is "very happy" with the result. IW suffered a mass exodus of staff after Activision fired co-founders Jason West and Vince Zampella in March for allegedly trying to "steal" the studio and using its resources for personal benefit. Around thirty-five had left as of May, with a number joining West and Zampella at their new studio Respawn Entertainment.

Infinity Ward will head back down the Cod mine, joining Treyarch and fledging studio Sledgehammer Games. "We believe this set up of studios working on Call of Duty has demonstrated it can do very well," Levy opined. It's been rumoured, bizarrely, that Sledgehammer might be working on an instalment starring space marines.

So what are your thoughts on this? Did Treyarch really do better because of the game they made or is it because of the massive sales? There is no denying that dedicated servers helped on the PC side. Also, there is no doubt all the bugs and performance problems that have been happening since release.

Will the next IW game be the blockbusters of the past or has there been enough changes that IW will not be the same studio it was? Will console sales make that an invalid point? Could it be that Treyarch and IW are enough of the same now that there is no difference between the two developers?

Finally, what about CoD in Space? Is it boldly going where no fps has successfully* gone before or is it lost in space?

Treyarch did good only because of IW they where just riding the hype it doest matter who would make the next cod game as soon as ppl see " Call of duty" on the cover they would buy it anyways. When black ops was released no one was thinking about world at war all eyes wher on mw2.

I think much will be decided in the next two weeks. If Treyarch manages to fix the game before we lose interest, they might still turn this game into a success in the eye of the PC community.

But otherwise we might start to feel burned, with the two latest major FPS games on the pc being, well, crapware.
We could really use a new FPS franchise that cant afford to live on past games, but must deliver a quality product to create their own niche.

After MW2, BFBC2's hit detection dice-rolling, MoH, and now this with Black Ops, many members of my clan are seriously discussing going back to MW or W@W.

I really hope 3arch can get this game fixed, but with the release so close to the holiday season it looks more like it won't be really fixed until next year some time.

Well, if COD go down the "space marine" route, that will be the day I quit COD. End of story.

I'd be willing to give it a chance. If "frozen future wasteland" can work, why not something along the lines of Battlefront without the Star Wars name/mythos?

Yeah, they could do the sci-fi right. I mean, look at halo and the UT series. I know a lot of people didnt like it, but 2142 was awesome. The gadgets and ideas were really creative. I mean, if you dont like sci-fi at all, then all these games were probably not for you.

I personally would love COD to go down that route. Im getting really sick of the same settings of WW2 and modern day with the only thing really different between them being the guns and player models. I loved BF2142 because it tried to take a step into the future without going all out on laser weaponry and high tech gizmos etc. However if COD was to take itself into the future it would be awesome to see a maybe year 3000 setting, and to see how well they could do with it.

I quit CoD when their games were obviously only designed for consoles with PC as an afterthought.

I love sci fi! As long as they go all out and don't half-ass it. 2142 was great, but they could have done so much more.

I liked the concept of 2142 in the end, I did hate it before because I was suffereing from bigotry at the time, but CoD going into a future setting may turn it into a Halo clone or something. TBH, it has to be clever, with a well thought out history and future tech.

Though, I am more of a modern setting person. But im not too worried about CoD going into a future setting, sure it doesnt make sense, its Call of Duty, which still sounds like its very world war 2, but modern isn't going to walk away anytime soon.

Call of Duty should stay in the present or the past. Historical Call of Duty's are the best IMO, there are tons of other series to play if you want a futuristic game.

Call of Duty's should just end and Activision should stop milking the title.
