EU Version of Black Ops Banned in Germany

    From computersandvideogames.com:
Germany's strict censorship laws have reportedly claimed another victim, and it's a biggie - next month's Call of Duty: Black Ops.

German punters hoping to get hold of the PC version of the shooter won't be able to play PAL versions imported from other EU territories, meaning they'll have to make do with a cut, localised version, according to PC Games (via MCV).

The nation's censorship laws require that stringent content checks be made, especially in the case of war games - the use of Nazi symbols such as swastikas in games have resulted the likes of Wolfenstein being pulled from shelves.

According to the reports, the Steam network will only authorise fully localised German versions of Black Ops, meaning copies imported from other EU territories won't be playable.

This post mentions Nazi's for previous games. I know Treyarch stated they were toning down the gore compared to W@W, but I guess that is not enough.

Single player still has gore, but maybe even the little bit of blood in multi is too much.

And they say there's no Nazi's left in Germany, bunch of censorship Nazi's!

Go across one of the many nonexistent boarders in Europe, connect to the interweb and activate your non-German version of Black Ops. Not even going to both explaining how to use a proxy. Going to be in Germany for 3.5 weeks over Christmas, you grow up their, you learn a few tricks.

If you import an english version you'll have to play behind a proxy it seems, and most of the time it induces lag.

I dont know what British military has, but I have heard that American military can usually buy US based games that are brought in. I dont know that for sure as I am not in the military, but maybe you all have something similar or some way of having it shipped in.

The problem Crunch is not finding the game, she can import it from UK. The problem is it doesn't work on STEAM unless behind a proxy if you have a non-german version. But I don't know if it's just an one time activation (then someone only need to activate the game outside of Germany) or if Steam check your IP each time you launch the game.

There has to be some way for you guys to get it. I would think you could have family mail you a copy. I wouldn't buy a version you can't understand, no matter what the game is.

What about a Steam account? Does steam monitor IP or go by what your account settings are? Anyone know for sure?

I don't know for sure, but since you have to go through Steam authorization every time you load the game (and while playing the game), I would expect you would have to use a proxy every time.

Amazon.com is your friend. I use the European Amazon to order stuff here all the time. You could use the US store front to buy stuff there.

I guess we need a german gamer, I have no idea how Steam works in that case.
