Yes. Buying the retail version only means that you don't have to download the files from Steam. When you put the disk in, the files are transferred to your computer and installed through Steam. If you pre-order through Steam, you download the files from Steam, and they are installed through Steam.

If you download the files through Steam, even though you already have the files installed, you can't play until Steam unlocks the game. You buy the disk, you can have the files installed, but again, you can't play the game until Steam unlocks it because the game is fully Steam integrated.

If the game wasn't fully Steam integrated, you wouldn't have to wait for Steam to unlock it to play the retail version. But the only difference between the retail version and the Steam version if the game is fully Steam integrated is the method of getting the files on your computer.

I don't see what's so bad about this except for Steam unlocking games when they decide to go to work.

You can play the game before Steam decides to unlock the digital copy if you bought the retail, if you want proof refer back to the MW2 release, again. I got it midnight retail, loaded it into Steam and started playing while all the people who bought it through Steam had to wait until the official release date for the digital version which was 2 days later. The only people who got their stats wiped were the people who played before the retail release of MW2.

That was different. The Steam release was delayed for 2 days because their verification was delayed. That whole release was a screw up. The game was still unlocked on release date.

Of course, it is possible the same thing will happen again. But I don't think they will screw up twice in a row.

Steamworks was announce a while ago in an interview. This announcement was made at the same time as Black Ops went up on Steam for preorder, that is all this is about really.

This makes the November 9th release basically mean a November 11th release :/

The big deal is thats its just like DICE saying how they made new maps for BC2. Technically they did, when in fact they did no such thing. If a publisher says the game is going to be released on a date and then playable two days later, then its actually released two days later.

If thats the case, then why not say the game is released once they declare it gold. Yeah, you cant buy, but it exists, so thats pretty much the same.

Its more marketing BS that allows publishers/developers to say whatever and then do something else and claim they did what they said. Again, DICE releasing Vietnam; They'll try hard in not dividing the community and with vanilla BC2, they succeeded. Vietnam is different and something else.

Well Activision released the game on the 9th, but bad ole Steam wouldnt unlock it until whenever. Yeah, its just a game, but I see it as something a bit bigger that if any other company did, would not fly in the world because they are just games. As long as gamers make excuses about it being just this or just that, you wont get the product you want. I guess everyone is just used to that now though and readily takes it.

Valve just needs to automate their activation process. Their offices are in Washington state, which is pretty much the last major timezone (I don't think there is much of a PC gaming community in Alaska or the Pacific islands). By the time they get to work and prepare, they are probably going to activate the game at 9 am - 11 am. Eastern Australia's timezone is probably going to be the first major timezone to have significant numbers of people buying the game. 9 am in Washington is 3 am the next day in Sydney. So really, their release is a day later than everyone elses.

What they need to do is automate unlocking by region.

If thats the case, what Steam should do is the first part of the world hitting that date and time period made by the developer, the game is unlocked and thats it. That or let the publisher/developer determine the timezone and be done with it.

I don't understand how some people don't get it. The unlocking thing is as good as it gets. Automated region time zones would mean some people would get to play the game 8 hours before other people. That's just a joke...
Basically, now the game will unlock at the same time for everybody, it doesn't matter what your clock says. It's the same ****ing moment in time, you morons (for those who don't get it).
You think you've been screwed over somehow?
I already pre-ordered a retail copy of the game, but guess what? My DVD-drive broke the other day, can't afford a new one. Now I can't pre-load the game. And when I get my copy I won't be able to install it from the disc, so I would have to download it from Steam. Now that's what you call being screwed over by life!

P.S: This whole ****ing thing (unlock time) shouldn't matter that much, people. It's just a game. I mean, I get it - like alot of you, I've waited for this game since it was announced and we're all pretty hyped about it this close to release...but c'mon. It's still just a game. We waited so long, we can wait a little bit longer...
