Re: DICE Veteran Gustav Halling: "Vietnam feels more hardcore"

ow did you tweak Battlefield 1942 when you designed Battlefield 1943?
-- Something we did in general was to make the maps 20-25 percent smaller throughout, to make them fit the faster, modern gameplay better. The gameplay in Battlefield 1942 wasn't fast at all. For example, it only had walk and run, and walk is pretty much gone entirely in games today -- you either run or sprint! In 1942 you could spend too much time going from A to B. The pace would probably be perceived as unacceptably slow today.
Ughhhh, it hurts to read this. I take it this guy is to blame for the destruction of what made the BF series great? Apparently he thinks everyone has ADD now and has "tweaked" the game accordingly.

If this guy has ANYTHING to do with BF3, I'm done!

Indeed. If you want to know why Battlefield sucks now. Look no further than Gustav Halling. The guy seems to be confused about whether hes a video game programmer or an Abercrombie and Fitch model.

It's sad that BF1943's maps are the most "Battlefieldy" of Dice's recent games, though. It's just sad.

There's clearly no hope for DICE anymore. I'd sell my gaming PC if it wasn't for RO2 which will be the next Battlefield.

              Good point heh - oops!

I do think it doesn't bode well for future BF games tho.

Battlefield 1942 maps were big because it usually had 4 or 5 aircraft dogfighting in it, ships bombarding other ships and submarines hunting in the depths. That's what made it great. That's what made it stand out, above the infantry only games like Counter Strike or Quake.

Just a shame that "The pace would probably be perceived as unacceptably slow today." seems to be code for "The console kiddies can't handle a bit of leg work". And I doubt we'll see something similar to BF1942 ever again (unless another independent dev comes out and makes one).

"It's a tight map very much inspired by Counter-Strike's old Dust maps." Why can't Battlefield maps be inspired by....... Battlefield games? Why can't we have another El Al, Gazala, Market Garden or Bulge, where you actually felt part of a battle, of a war and not simply a small contact.

"Plus designers get more freedom to tweak weapons quickly and easily with this." Great idea! Good thing they're using this ability to tweak the weapons and get patches out to the consumer quickly......oh that's right, their patching system is ****ed.
Dude. Totally. The problem is that the gaming industry has become.....well.......an industry.

People who don't give a crap about gaming starting looking to the industry as a safe investment after the recession hit and people started realizing the video game sales didn't drop with everything else.

So it got some headlines and it's mainstream now.

But this was a very nice post and pretty much sums up the collective betrayal of DICE to the pc user community. A game is only as strong as its weakest platform. And we have consoles to deal with now.

Well, there's a reason dedicated volunteer soldiers outperform mercenaries most of the time.
Money isn't a strong enough motivation to do something to the best of your abilities.

I work at a company with over 500 people and after a year of talking to the players, I feel like I am the only person there who plays games on the computer. The “XBOX” is all they live for.

I try to tell them how much better/bigger the games are on the computer… but it falls on deaf ears.

                          I am the Minority!

Join the club. I bought an Xbox 360 mostly for deployments. It's easier to ship a monitor with HDMI input and a console with a sleeve of games than it is to carry my full-on gaming PC. There are also more soldiers playing on the Xbox, so I can game with my troops.

The times I took my laptop with UT2K4 and other good old MP PC games, I ended up playing alone against bots.

Thats why as soon as they come out with a good mouse and keyboard for the Xbox I'm sure I'll find myself on that a lot more.
