Black Ops Heading Toward Beating Out Modern Warfare 2

In a strange twist of news from mtv.com:

Treyarch has already indicated that they may one-up "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" by using dedicated servers for "Black Ops," but the game could be poised to outdo "MW2" in terms of pre-order numbers as well. Their November 9 release date is still months away, but some numbers from the retail sector have "Black Ops" tracking to do just that.

Right now, "Black Ops" pre-orders are outpacing "MW2," Pacific Crest Securities analyst Evan Wilson said, based on accounts from retail sources, according to Industry Gamers.

Sales numbers may come up short in the long term, however, Wilson noted, predicting that "Black Ops" would be the first Call of Duty title that fails to outsell its predecessor. Though he foresees "Black Ops" selling 12 million copies, he also believes that "competition, weaker marketing, and the Infinity Ward situation" will prevent Treyarch from eclipsing the 16 million mark that "MW2" hit in the fourth quarter of 2009.

Now that Treyarch is a "100-percent Call of Duty studio," they will of course be hoping that Wilson is mistaken about post-launch sales, but this year's holiday is liable to be a fierce one in the games market. When the final store flyers are out and the receipts are printed, there may only be so much Treyarch and Activision can do to connect with more buyers.

We were talking about this some in the forums. Not a lot of news coming out about Black Ops, but it seems pre-orders are very high. What are the reasons for this event? Are people ready for something different? Is the decision for dedicated servers playing a large role in this? Is this the next "shiny" object for gamers?

    I also found this surprising:

Wilson noted, predicting that "Black Ops" would be the first Call of Duty title that fails to outsell its predecessor.
I did not think World at War topped Modern Warfare sales. Could this be an inaccurate statement or will we never know since Activision never really tells their total sales for all platforms?

Well I've been wanting another Vietnam based game after playing ol' BFV so that's one reason for me.

Another person who doesn't see WaW's MP as a success... (I actually liked it better than CoD4, besides the Campaign)

I actually liked WaW's MP more than CoD4's. Less explosives spam + Bolt Action rifles = :wee:

Is it really that surprising that I would like shotgun slugs in BFBC2 after I used unscoped Mosin Nagants and Kar98ks so much?

I don't think it will outsell MW2 no matter how good it is. Too many die-hard IW fanboys that will refuse to buy a Treyarch title because of CoD3 or whatever other stupid reason they make.

          I liked CoD5's MP a lot btw.

I am so very pumped for this, I didn't like WaW that much and I believe it was the fact of its setting. However this game looks promising and with dedicated servers, the amount of hackers will hopefully drop.

I liked WaW. Not as much as CoD4, but it was still a fun game for the time I played it. Treyarch can only improve on WaW, and they seem to learn from their mistakes pretty well (see the difference between CoD3 and WaW).

But this game will not outsell MW2 for a couple simple reasons. First, all the hate towards IW and Activision from Modern Warfare 2. There are a lot of people that will be hesitant to buy the game or not buy the game based on that. Second, there are surprisingly IW fanboys who have a strange hatred towards Treyarch. From what I've been reading (especially the Black Ops Facebook page, but that's not worth much), there are people who think Treyarch is the bad company. Sure, CoD3 was horrible, but WaW was better than MW2. I don't understand some people.

Also, IMO, the true success of a game is reflected in the sales of the sequel. CoD4 was amazing, hence the huge hype and success for MW2. But many people hated MW2, so I expect the sales will drop for Black Ops.
