Engine Overhaul for Black Ops

    From callofduty.com:

We’ve just added 14 gorgeous new screenshots to the media section which show off the kind of power the latest Call of Duty engine has to offer in Black Ops! Sample image below (click to see more).

At the beginning of each project, the team at Treyarch digs in and goes to work on engine enhancements with a focus on supporting the demands of the new environments and gameplay for our next title. For Black Ops, it was important to the team to have incredible photo-realistic lighting, huge draw distances, explosive destruction and effects, and mind-blowing character details.

We completely re-tooled the lighting system from soup to nuts, integrated texture streaming which makes levels like “Payback” possible, and provided our artists the tools and platform they needed to create stunning characters with detail down to their pores! We also went big overhauling the physics, jungle, water, and fire tech – the list goes on and on. You can see what we’re talking about from our gallery, but no screenshot even comes close to what you’ll be experiencing November 9th 2010!

Follow @JD_2020 on Twitter for all the inside scoop!

Sounds like the changes on the engine may really update the game image. What are your thoughts on the details? Too good to be true or is it going to bring a fresh look to the game? Be sure to check out the other 13 screenshots.

I'm surprised as well. I am no game developer so I dont know whats involved, but its been mentioned a number of times how they have reached the peak of their game engine. Then they somehow tweak it and its even better than before.

Im not sure how that works, but it is nice to see.

Looking good. I love how every game they keep improving the engine (hell, even MW2's engine was improved), yet the PC specs stay about the same. The Call of Duty series is always optimized amazingly. Hopefully they follow suit with this game.

It's time for a whole new engine rewrite.

Exactly, and I like that. I think a game should be an improvement of its predecessor both game play and graphically, as for me, they are the two most important factors.

CoD has always looked very good for its computing requirements. It's one of IW/Treyarch's greatest strengths IMO.

Oh gosh, now I gotta improve my PC a.s.a.p. I don't think Windows 2000 can cope with the scope ! :salute:

I see nothing amazing, still early '00s poly counts and big normal mapping. They just made the textures higher res... So probably just "tweaked" how the engine handles them in the memory.

                    I definitely notice more detail:

"Texture streaming" as they called it in MW2. But I have to admit that just a simple thing like that can improve the look of a game a lot.

But they've hardly made any ground breaking work to the engine - still the same Q3 engine trying to look grown up. :wee:

The pics look good, but I doubt it will look like that ingame, even the e3 demonstration looks too soft in places.

Texture steaming has been in UE for a long time... not really anything new to the industry.

                              New to CoD though.

CoD is never at the top of the graphics department, but you can't say it doesn't have good graphics for being such an undemanding game.
