Sonic 4: Episode 1 Planned for This Summer

Sega has taken the mask off of the next Sonic title by announcing the upcoming episodic release of Sonic 4. The retro 2D gameplay will include some 3D visuals and will pick up after the events of Sonic & Knuckles.

GameSpot also has a brand-new Q&A session with Sega's Ken Balough.
As far as gameplay goes, should we expect classic old-school Sonic 2D mechanics or something new added into the mix?

All the Sonic favorites [are] here for sure! Spin dash, power sneakers, etc. But you will also see the homing attack added, and in true Sonic fashion, you can compete with your friends for the fastest level times through leaderboards.

Sonic 4 will be released as a downloadable title on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii. It will rival the Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles "episodic" titles in terms of scale and length. Look for more information soon.
