    BASH 136: Tears of Joy?

I normally post up the Bash episodes in the CoD section, but time changes all things. Bash 136 covers Bad Company 2 and how people not in the Battlefield side of things see this game.

    <a href="http://images.totalgamingnetwork.com/images/bash136.jpg"><img src="http://images.totalgamingnetwork.com/images/thumb_bash136.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a>

Will BFBC2 rescue the PC FPS community from the malaise it’s in after the MW2 fiasco or will it simply make things worse?

The goal we set for this cast was to determine whether DICE deserves some of the negative feedback they’ve recently received from the community or whether we truly are getting what they have been promising us all along.

Lack of a console, modding tools and private dedicated servers have made people questioning whether the PC hardcore community is an endangered species.
To help us resolve whether BFBC2 will be simply a MW2-style console port, or will it be a full-fledged PC game that will capture our attention for years is long-time Battlefield admin

    John aka Jag-Five-O from thecompanyhub.com

and Battlefield competitive gamer and caster

Martin aka “nkm” from TeamRush http://www.teamrusheu.com.

Among the topics discussed in today's cast: <!--more-->

    1. The Beta: It begins on the 28th of Jan and ends on the 25th of FEb. We'll be playing the Port Valdez map, 32 player servers, Game mode will be Rush. It's Russian versus American teams in Alaska. We have Main Battle Tanks, Quad bikes and mobile AA in the snow.

    - How do I get to participate in the Beta? Why is it a closed Beta?
    - Will EA get Steam to push out Beta keys?
    - Has the closed Beta pissed off the community?

    2. It appears that DICE has a narrow definition of what a dedicated server is.

EA will not be distributing dedicated server software to the general public. Meaning that the only dedicated servers will be officially sanctioned ones...and if past practice is any indication...they are quite pricey...$1500/yr is something i've heard.

The Battlefield Blog states: "There are many factors for why we have decided this with the biggest factor being security and integrity of our game & Dedicated Servers."

    - Will clans be able to host their own servers?
    - How will the EA dedi server system work?
    - Is piracy the real reason to block public dedi servers?
    - Will the system have matchmaking?
    - Is this any different from past BF practice?
    - Is it a deal breaker for the community? Has DICE gone back on their word?

    3. DICE producer Gordon Van Dyke said there would probably not be any mod tools available day one of release. Part of this was due to the fact that BFBC2 is using the new Frostbite engine and creating ModTools was a bit beyond their reach at the moment.

News from DICE this past week has made it official. No mod tools

    - What does this mean? No Custom maps?
    - How is this different than past BF games?

    4. According to DICE dev Johan Anderson, who tweeted the words “No Console” a few days ago in response to a pointed question, Bad Company 2 will apparently not have a means to direct input client-side commands into the game. Basically, this would have been similar to the ~ command in CoD.

EA stated this on their official forums "We have not removed a console from BC2. The simple reason is that BC1 and BC2 never have had an in-game console. Which also means that the game won't be possible to hack in this regard.”

    - Why the anger? Is it just CoD guys making all this noise?
    - What does NOT having a console mean to the average player?

    5. With respect to the competitive community. They had a wishlist of things they wanted with BFBC2:

    - an objective game mode similar to S&D...
    - the ability to mod the game...
    - First person spectate mode...
    - Battlerecorder....

...did they get any of them?

    - Will BFBC2 allow hardcore competitive tournaments and online competitive gaming?
    - What will happen to the BF competitive community?

    6. How has DICE been as a dev during this release?

    7. With MW2 and possibly now BFBC2 not meeting some of the hardcore communities bare minimums, is FPS on PC truly dead?

    8. Is this game a console port?

    9. Has all the recent BFBC2 news been a deal breaker for you? Will you be buying it?

    10. Some are talking about BFBC2 being an MW2 killer. Will BFBC2 be anywhere near MW2 in popularity, either in PC or console sales....how do you see it?

As much as i hate saying this, i doubt that bc2 will be anywhere near mw2 in popularity. not many people outside the pc community know about the bf series, but almost everyone knows about the cod.

I dont think Dice makes any money off server rentals.

Also, this article also mentions that:

They are. They are CoD people. All the people in this podcast, their entire gaming experience is with CoD. When MW2 came out, it pretty much put all of them out of "business" as they are modders, hosts for CoD, website developers for mods and the community, and so on.

Battlefield is VERY new to them.

Don't rent a server then. I don't mind paying for one so they aren't milking money out of me.

There's already been 3 Battlefield titles on consoles:
                  - Battlefield Modern Combat
                  - Battlefield Bad Company
                  - Battlefield 1943

                  - Jockyitch obviously has no idea about Battlefield, simply playing some BF2 would save him a fair amount of questions.

                  - Martin definitely loves COD4 and doesn't play much/any Battlefield. He says he is only interested in competitive gaming (which I doubt BC2 is even intended to cater for), yet seems against standardization/ranked server systems (bit of a paradox).

                  - Jag-Five-O however is/was a BF2 admin with a decent amount of knowledge on the subject, I also agree with his view on the situation (eg. BC2 isn't BF3, or a COD sequel).

Re: BASH 136: Tears of Joy?

So much bad information coming from these guys:
                    1. Server Files were distributed with BF2 and BF2142 on the discs
                    2. those servers could never be officially ranked (they can however support a private ranking system mods: Project Reality for example)
                    3. Only GSP's with contracts with EA/DICE were able to provide ranked servers, and stream to the rank server

There are a lot of Battlefield 2 mods... More then COD4 COD5 and COD2 combined.

DICE always had a superior way of forcing you to buy their Expansions DLC, which is a centralized ranking system, that can't be hacked easily. Speculating that we wont have mods just because they want to sell DLC, is just wrong. Even without mod tools people will be able to make mods for the game.

BF2142 and BF2 had no competitive mod for a long time and it worked out pretty well. Even promod for BF2 has made very small changes, that didn't really improve gameplay, expect give you the ability to hop and shoot. The bad thing about no console is that we wont be able to check GUID's through the game. Maybe another way will be figured out, through the server remote access or trackers.

What's with the mod tools? Bunch of lazy hacks that need tools to mod a game? BF1942 didn't have mod tools and it spawned Desert Combat.

A little investigation and innovation go a long way. Dam lazy kids these days.

Perhaps him not a lot, I don't know. But I do. He is right. Mod tools are nice and practically a requirement for custom maps. But given the right team, and willpower, you can build a mod simply with a 3D CAD program and some sample config files from the game itself.

Edit: Guys will you stop smacking each other. This is TBF2, not some COD community bashing fest. By all means give your opinion but personal attacks are out of order.

Some people just have unrealistic expectations of BC2, we're lucky to have it on PC after BC1. We could still be waiting for BF3 instead or playing MW2 with no dedicated servers at all.

Rex Hill (Rexman) apparently created the unofficial mod tools for 1942. CE Mod was his demonstration of them.

It's probably a lot harder to do so with Frostbite, last I heard he was coding weapons for Kaos studios.
