Cold War Rumor for Call of Duty 7

Bashandslash.com has an interesting article up about Treyarchs next Call of Duty:
Old rumors have resurrected that Treyarch's next Call of Duty installment, set to debut this fall, will be based on the events surrounding the Cold War.

With IW making a modern warfare game, a Cold-War game would signal Call of Duty's complete break with World War II.

A few months ago, the very first rumors about the new Treyarch game suggested a Vietnam conflict. Those rumors came about from an Activision producer looking at getting the rights to 60's era music and it was never proven that the music was destined for a Treyarch product and hence the idea of a CoD7 in 'nam died.

That producer, Noah Heller, is on record saying this on joystiq.com :

"I won't let your readers read into the comment too much, but we are showing the final battles of the Pacific and the European Theatre and that lets us put a close to the war. I'm sure game companies will be making World War II games for years to come and World War II is a very classic war. But we're happy that we put the war to bed."

Now, the rumors are coming hot and heavy that Trey is developing a game set during the so-called "Cold-War": a period of time when the armies of the world's strongest nations sat on the sideline while they watched their proxies duked it out:

So what will the game be all about? The Cuban missile crisis? The war in Vietnam? The war in the Middle East?

    Korea a good fit?

One war during that period of history did not fit the proxy-versus-proxy mold was the war in Korea. That war would eventually see United Nations forces going up against hundreds of thousands of Chinese soldiers streaming across the Yalu river.

For many reasons, my hope is that Treyarch picks Korea over all other possible scenarios.

Many fans of the series would rather the game be set in Vietnam, but that had a distinctly "asymmetric" feel to it and few events in that conflict could generate the melodramatic patriotism that CoD games like to create.

However, a Korean war was more of an even match between the two combatants and had many emotionally charged moments.

Imagine you are with an American platoon on a hilltop in the north of Korea, late in the war. It's night. It's cold. Suddlenly you hear trumpets and you see thousands of Chinese rushing up the hill towards your position. That would certainly make for a breathtaking SP level, wouldn't it?

A Korean conflict would allow the use of non-American "allied teams" - a common feature in all CoD games. The ability play as British, Canadian, or Australian forces, say, would obviously reap dividends in foreign game sales.

All-in-all, a game based on the Korean conflict has obvious benefits over a game based on a Vietnam war - which to this day raises bitter memories in all Americans.

What are your thoughts on this? Is it a surprise? There is a lot of Vietnam speculation, but would Korea be better?

Just as long as they don't follow IW suit then I really don't care what era it is in but the Vietnam era would be pretty cool for a game. Only have seen 1 Vietnam era game on the market that was worth a damn.

I'm supportive of either Vietnam or the Cold War. Treyarch seems to have a knack for making their Call of Duty games grittier than IW do, if World at War was anything to go by.

i'd love to see korean war done. it's one war that still hasn't gotten the fps treatment. honestly though, i'd rather Battlefield do korean war first, with all the vehicles.

in the end though i'd put my money that they'd go with vietnam war. i believe we got reports of treyarch looking for music from that particular era not too long ago.

Thats true, BUT, (big butt) that era had a lot of other conflicts, including Korea. Of course, Korea was in the 50s and Activision never said what the music was for.

Vietnam would be awful. While it would be interesting, it'd be a pointless game as it's largely based on gurilla (sp) warfare where the stronger for relys largly on air power with very little armoured involvment. While a lot of patrols in the jungle would suffer large casualties from sickness, dehydration and booby traps, with many US soldiers never seeing the enemy. Then there's the whole, torching of villages. So much for winning hearts and minds. So, either the SP would be a very irritating and repetitive trudge through the jungle while losing more and more people to enemies you can't shoot at [and knowing Call of Duty, you'd be killed about six times during the game by pikes in the ground with faeces spread on them, so either you die, or go home with Hep C]. Either that, or a very short yet intense SP with maybe a few jungle patrols against say, an american firebase under attack. Then you have to have the battle in the Shadow of the Valley of the Mountain of Death (ie. We Were Soldiers) which was the largest single engagement of forces in vietnam at that time (which puts things into perspective, it also remained the largest until the Tet offensive). Then the rest would be repetitive [but intense] ambushes and defence missions. Cool, I guess.

Korea was done in the ... Confict Series? Maybe. I remember that I have played in Korea. I can see it being very reminiscent of the MW2 Afgan Campaign (or at least, the first mission of it). Korea was, in essence, USA vs. Korea aka China, which would be an interesing turn I suppose.

                        Amateur historian ftw?

I want to see a futuristic cod game, I would like that
I am really happy about leaving WW2 as that was a heavily used setting and becoming stale.
But Vietnam or cold war would be nice. :salute:
