EA Looking For FPS Crown

This was a pretty good article by mtv multiplayer. No, it is not entirely CoD related, but read it first:

When "Medal of Honor" goes to Afghanistan next year, EA wants to see some big returns. Not only do they have their eyes on the big earnings "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" raked in this month. They want to usurp Infinity Wards's status as the biggest name in first-person shooters. There's obviously a bit of nostalgia at work as the company looks back ten years ago when "Medal of Honor" was top dog, but EA believes they have the gameplay to back up their aspirations.

"I'm not saying it's going to happen tomorrow, but in the way that Activision sort of alternates sequels of 'Modern Warfare' and 'Call of Duty' and owns the leadership position in FPS [first-person-shooter], between 'Medal of Honor' and 'Battlefield,' I want it back," EA CEO John Riccitiello told Kotaku. "And we're going to get there with innovation and quality."

The stars seemed to be aligned this year for the record-breaking success "MW2" achieved, and Riccitiello realizes that his quest is going to take time. But he thinks his franchise will have a few things going for it in 2010 to begin EA's siege.

"We think we've got an advantage over 'Modern Warfare 2' with our multiplayer," he said. "The guys at DICE do that really, really well."

It's great that Riccitiello believe in his product, but "MW2" sales marks will be a high standard to strive for next year. Who knows, though? There are obviously a lot of petition-signing PC gamers out there who may be interested in a new FPS franchise of choice.

Do you think "Medal of Honor" will be able to top "MW2"? Does EA have realistic expectations? Share your reactions in the comment section below.

Those are very good questions. What are your thoughts on all this? Will this increase competition and give more options? Is EA setting their goals too high and need to focus on the full Battlefield options? Do you think there is already enough FPS choices out there and the new Medal of Honor just muking the waters further? Does Activision/IW have anything to worry about with their standings?

Re: EA Looking For FPS Crown

I think EA have learned that trying to milk shooter franchises into the ground doesn't work as well anymore. At least not on the PC. MoH was a great series until they got lazy and cocky and released Airborne without dedicated servers. That was their downfall, and the sales just weren't there because of it. IW got lucky that there was so much hype and goodwill surrounding the CoD/MW series, and pretty much no direct competition. After abusing the trust of the community, many people won't believe anything they say now. Everything they said about IWNet was an outright lie. Even many console gamers have reported huge glitches, unacceptable lag, and general imbalance in the game.

So EA/Dice are in a position to do just what they said they want to: "get there with innovation and quality." If they are open and honest, and provide a good product, the numbers will follow. That's the was it was always done in the past. It's only been recently that studios rely on secrecy and marketing hype to sell retrograded games. "Innovation and quality" need to make a return to the lexicon of gaming development studios.

Hopefully this isn't just lip service to capitalize on the disillusionment of the community in the wake of MW2. Until they give me a reason to doubt, I'll take them at their word.
We're looking for someone to provide another great game.

Looking back when AA and SH were released, they were good games. Though these days they are bare minimum, if even that, for what makes a good game. I think what you really mean is you hope that the new MOH will have the same or bigger impact on the gaming community that AA had when it was released.

A game is a good game no matter the bells and whistles. You show a 9 year old whose never seen a video game console an NES and he'll think you are God.

that just means games from EA, not necessarily MOH.

Some more info:

Medal of Honor and has been slated for a July - August 2010 release, while the first preview trailer will be shown during the Spike TV Video Game Awards on December 12.
Medal of Honor is to be set as a modern-times shooter featuring a US special operations unit in the war-torn Afghanistan of recent years.

The new game is being developed as a collaboration between EA's Los Angeles studio, which has worked on most of the previous games in the series, and the Swedish-based DICE group which has built the successful and popular Battlefield series from the ground up.

oh dear dice has got a lot on their plates now.

does this mean MOH will also need couple year's worth of patches to be playable?
