    Activision Recruits New CoD Developer

The Call of Duty series has been home to two fantastic developers over the past few years, though many PC fans may feel differently with the release of Modern Warfare 2. Both Infinity Ward and Treyarch have worked side by side to bring gamers multiple iterations of the franchise, but they may soon be accompanied by a new developer, reported the Los Angeles Times.

Activision has recently picked up a third studio to work on future Call of Duty games, although details about the new developer have yet to be released. However, it is interesting to note that Activision did just announce its new Sledgehammer Games Studio which is said to be working on an existing franchise. While this may seem like good news, the publisher also mentioned that they are still keeping their options open and that a Call of Duty MMO is still a possibility, which could upset a large percentage of the game's fan base.
As mentioned on G4 TV, "it's not known what the future holds for the series in terms of expanding beyond its first-person shooter roots, but a source close to Activision told the LA Times that a Call of Duty MMO was still a possibility. Rumors of this drastic shift for the series date back to last year, so this latest news isn't terribly surprising."

Fans will just have to wait and see exactly who will be joining the Call of Duty franchise, and what type of game the developer will be offering. The possibility of an MMO was hinted at back in March of 2008, and this announcement seems like further confirmation that the idea of a Call of Duty MMO is a viable option for Activision.

        FPS and MMO's rarely work.
I'd love to see an RPG based on the Call of Duty series but I'm really not sure how it would work though but I can tell you a hell of alot better than an MMO would.

They are going to drop Infinity Ward and hire Blizzard...

Let's face it, they may as well.

Now that you mention it, Blizzard have been working on a new MMO for awhile.
But thats all we know. They've had job applications up stating they need developers for a new exciting MMO.

Anyone heard of an MMO called APB. Sort of like GTA4 online.

I think Blizzard will develop an MMO based on Diablo.

                  ^

Nope, already got Diablo 3 in the works and they've already stated that it isn't to do with the Diablo, Warcraft or Starcraft universes.

This is something completely new apparently.

                    Could it possibly be Sledgehammer?

They announced a new studio today...

Yeah, that's definitely a possibility that I included in the news post. They haven't announced who the new developer is, but they did announce that they picked up Sledgehammer to work on an existing title/franchise. So, it could be, but I don't know why they wouldn't just say it straight out if that is the case.
