it will slow down my PC trying to scan every little new file that gets downloaded/created on my HD. even while i am in programs.

If live scanning is causing problems, then you have issues elsewhere. Perhaps a very slow HD?

Also, if you're suggesting it's the AV from the hard disk activity light going mad, turn off Windows indexing

Packets are so small and no game 100%'s a CPU (unless like I said, your PC is very old) so, there is no slow down. I always play with Avast scanning in the background.

The only time you will get a slow down is if you're actively scanning your hard disk. Realtime scanning looks at stuff in the memory prior to being processed by the CPU.

I run Symantec Endpoint 24/7 and it idles at about 25mb as well. You should really run some AV software...

ok, i haven't used real time protection for 3 yrs or so but i'll turn it on now and see how that is. my cpu is a quad core so i'm guessing it can spare some for background AV processes.

Some ****ty AV's do scanning of the HD in the background which is what causes hold ups. Any good AV will only scan your hard disk when either you tell it or set it to.

As I said, real time scanning is memory only.

I don't run AV period I just run CCleaner once in a while, I haven't had a virus for 6+ years, I reformat every 2 years anyway to uncluttered my PC. Whats stupid is installing AV program that slows your PC down, and takes a crap in your system files while you have get rid of viruses manually anyhow, because the AV can't do it itself and just puts suspected files into quarantine which is stupid, and pointless. If I get a virus or my harddrive fails, I can always restore everything from my backup hard drives which makes a image of my C drive once a month.

AV software is pointless causes more problems then it solves.

Ha, I did that and somehow got a keylogger. Took my ebay password and started listing fake items under my name

I just run a light AV program (Microsoft Security Essentials) in combination with the UAC (love Windows 7) it can pretty much most common trouble makers. Its better to be safe then having to reinstall or re-image your drive, because you thought you were a smarter then average internet user. I'm a bit troubled with games like Borderlands and MW2 that require either universal plug and play to be on in your router or you need to manually open ports, I can see problems in the future.

Windows 7's UAC is a lot less invasive (if you choose it to be). The built in Firewall is very good, I personally use it now in combination with Avast :)

I've liked the UAC since Vista, what I didn't like was that it caused problems with games that were meant to be installed in XP with admin level access. Ask any computer guy around, Windows running 100% with admin level access is bad news, even Linux has a prompt that actually asks for your password. Windows 7 just makes the UAC that much more cherry and there isn't a rootkit known to man that can get past the UAC (viruses, trojans and worms nothing compared to the headache of a rootkit).
