Activision Donating $1M To Help Vets

In what could possibly be seen as a marketing scheme for Modern Warfare 2, Activision has unveiled their plans to donate $1,000,000 USD tomorrow in the hopes of helping veterans. Check it out:

    <a href="http://images.totalgamingnetwork.com/images/activision.1257798591.jpg"><img src="http://images.totalgamingnetwork.com/images/thumb_activision.1257798591.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a>
Activision plans to unveil a $1 million backed non-profit corporation tomorrow designed to help soldiers transition to civilian careers tomorrow.

The Call of Duty Endowment (CODE) unveiling comes on Veterans Day and the official launch day for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

The morning press conference will take place at the Newseum in Washington D.C. and will be hosted by Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick.

The CODE advisory council members include MG Matthew P. Caulfield (USMC-Ret.), COL Roger Dimsdale (USA-Ret.), RADM Ronne Froman (USN-Ret.), CPT Gordon H. Mansfield (USA-Ret.), BG James A. "Spider" Marks (USA-Ret.), GEN Montgomery C. Meigs (USA-Ret.), SFC Steve Robinson (USA-Ret.), BG Harry A. Sieben, Jr. (USANG-Ret.), MG Craig Whelden (USA-Ret.) and MCPO Maurice Wilson (USN-Ret.)

Kotick told the Washington Post that "The joblessness rate that [veterans] should have should be far less than the national average, not more. How do you expect people to actually join the military if when they leave the military they can't integrate back into the free market they're supposed to be protecting?"

This is obviously a wonderful contribution to the cause, but should we see it as a noble gesture or a dirty marketing tactic? Let us know what you think.

Yea for helping out veterans, wow makes me sick how they're doing it... Let's see, one million dollars in more ads, or one million dollars of advertising for them and their game, but go to a good cause? At least someone else is benefiting from it.

Maybe they should do $3 or $4 million, with all the man hours they saved on the New MODERN WARFARE 2 Game, this would really make them look OK!

As a veteran who had a hard time getting a job when I got back and now still works full-time for the military, I'm all for this. Kind of lame that it's propaganda used to sell a game, but still.

Thats why PC gamers pay $10 more for MW2? If I knew that I would have sent a care package for more then $10 as I have many times. Oh and if you do have such a program I encourage you to join, just buy some AA batteries, some music CS, Disposable cameras ect ect soldiers appreciate it.

Cool, now can they donate dedicated servers to the PC version of MW2?

I just thought of this: by making Steam mandatory, they have ensured that deployed service members can't play on their laptops on their off-time.
We had quite a few wifi LAN parties with CoD2 and UT2k4 last time I was in Sandyland. Relieves stress and all that.

Wow, think of what type of a DEDICATED SERVERS IW could have just for MW2 alone with $1 million

I agree, it's awesome to donate to vets :salute:... but on the release date of your most anticipated game ever? hmmm

Good move but I would like to see that happen on any other day but the release of your game Mr. Kotick

Should be a % of money from each copy sold.

They're doing this because in the wake of Fort Hood incident and the controversy over their "shoot up unarmed civilians" level which is only bound to grow as time goes on and the average soccer mom find out about it, they're going to need some positive PR on their side.

                            I am all for this

                            BUT

i have a feeling they are doing this, to not seem so bad with this "killing civilians" part of the game

My local game store (locally owned) got his copies of MW2 today. played the first 4 missions of the game, i got to the part where you play as the so called "undercover" agent posing as a terrorist. I am still in shock at how graphical this part is. these people are just sitting there, running away, and they mow them down. many when i played were limping and crawling away and they still shot the crap out of them.

i have a feeling they are doing this to help turn the negative eye of this part of the game, to something positive.

You speak words of wisdom ATM743.

But at least the money is going towards a good cause, and hopefully they're not doing this just to look good because they can throw money away... That would suck... Hard.
