402 Responds to Dedicated Server Outcry

After over 170,000 disgruntled gamers signed an online petition demanding the return of dedicated servers, Four Zero Two has finally released an official response in an attempt to calm players around the world. In the video, he mentions that while Infinity Ward recognizes the PC community's feelings toward the removal of dedicated server support, the dev team will continue to support IW.net (Infinity Ward's new console-like P2P matchmaking system) and believes that it will provide users with a much easier, more hassle free online experience.

    <object width="512" height="319"><param name="movie" value="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:453113"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:453113" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="512" height="319"></embed></object>

Four Zero Two emphasizes that IW.net will simplify the casual online gaming experience, although he never mentions what specific advantages it provides over the tried and true dedicated servers. Finally, he adds that players should not criticize the system until they actually try it, and that many complaints received don't actually relate specifically to IW.net. Whether the community agrees with him is a completely different story, but from 402's reply it looks like the PC community may be waiting quite some time before they receive what they actually asked for in the game.

That's because he knows there are NONE.

      Felt the same way myself.

but the only way to try it is to pay the money for the game, isn't it? at that point, it's all over, they won simply when we pay for the game. if we pay and don't like it, there's pretty much nothing we can do.

Yup, and the community has asked for a demo. If the system works like they say it does then let the community see it in action and then they'll hand over the cash.

            Give us your $$$.

also, he says they'll improve IW.net, not drop it, not add dedicated servers.

He's just plain lying. Pretty much all of our concerns with IWNet are based on exactly what we've been told and the technical limitations of such a system.

              9v9
No admin ability to remove problem players (cheaters; et al)
Inability to have a guaranteed place to play with constant uptime and consistent pings.
Now we need to work at coordinating friends lists and planning when we're going to play instead of just showing up. (how is this easier?)
              No mods
              No custom maps

Again, I do not think that word means what you think it means.

He basically called us stupid again while telling us to give Activision our money for their beta.

I think what he was trying to say is that the community's complaints were about the lack of dedicated servers and the lack of features, not that IW.net had specific problems in itself - although the two go hand-in-hand. What really caught me off guard was the fact that he mentioned "if you don't like it, then we can fix it," but there was never a need for anything to be changed in the first place. Also, what much of the PC community asked for, or at least expected, was dedicated servers, mod support, etc. - we don't want even a working IW.net.

"were not losing anything" Yeah, BS.

As stated above we are losing a lot...

I know us PC gamers represent a small portion of the COD fan base but I hope that everyone votes with their wallets. Its the only way to get a company to understand that the community is not happy about the game. This could also of course turn them away from the PC alltogether and they just make console games but IMO thats no big loss if they don't fix the multiplayer.

As for a match making service, I've put up with left 4 dead on the PC its annoying to say the least. I've even played COD4 on the xbox360 and the match making on that is far inferior to a dedicated server list. Also 9v9 as the max amount of players? I enjoyed playing on my 20v20 crazy servers every now and again.

Agreed, and if you listen to the video 402 mentions something about "server lists being difficult to navigate and find a server that fits you personally," where he basically insults the intelligence of the average gamer. While that may not have been his intention, he's basically saying that we should have their system pick games for us, rather than give us that power.

i don't think there will be enough PC version owners to fill a server bigger than 9v9 anyways so does it matter? :p

Good job on the post though Defekt.

Fixed your embed code. For reference, use that embed code from now on, replacing the two URLs in it, and adjusting the width and height twice, accordingly.

what he does not know is that pc gamers are NOT 13 year old kids that have no idea how this **** works.

have you seen one person compalin about getting into servers? the answer to this easy riddle is NO

Day of defeat, day of defeat source, TF classic, TF2, cod, cod2, cod4, bf1942, bf2 bf2142, cod WaW, Crysis, CSS, Quake ET, Fear 1, Quake 3, ut2004 and MANY more use server lists to get to games. anyone can go to www.game-monitor.com and find how many servers of what game are available

there are 13219 total cod4 servers in the world, 2883 are in the US alone. you think thats allot, Counter strike 1.6 has 35234 total servers and counter strike source has 35927 total servers.

30,000 + total servers for 5+ year old games is pretty damn amazing imo. it more than doubles the amount of servers for cod4. if these so called server lists are so hard to find, i wounder how all theses people are still playing Cs and Css

I'm not going to go to a car dealer and have the guy go, this truck does not have a normal AC system in it but we cut out the window in the back and stuck a window AC unit in there. why dont you buy the truck and from your feedback we will decided to change it back to how trucks with AC usually are
