IW refused large budget from Activision

A bit of a weird one this, but apparently Infinity Ward actually turned down a huge budget for creating Modern Warfare 2. Here is what they had to say:
“Early on – when we decided to make a sequel – Activision estimated out a ridiculous budget. And we were like: ‘No, we don’t need that’,” he said. Though Bowling didn’t go into numbers, his description of the handsome budget is a telling sign of how important the franchise is to Activision. He added, however, that Infinity Ward was typically “pretty tight” with its development budgets.

Bowling was philosophical on the value of high budgets, discussing how they can even impede on the development process: “Much like we don’t let ourselves get distracted by hype, if you have excess you feel like you should use excess,” he said. “So we said ‘let us design a game the way we’d always design a game. And let us focus on that.’ So we didn’t let the budget affect our mentality. We would only put stuff in the game that is right for the game, and not because we can.”

    I'm so confused...

Im starting to wonder if we are dealing with the same people who made CoD4.

Sometimes i guess you just get lucky?

Im not, the guy is speaking sense, thats how you design a game when someone offers you 120 Million US dollars while you really only need 40. Unfortunately 402 also contradicts himself because the game obviously "looks" and "plays" as if they "used the excess" because the game looks like an incoherent pile and mass of perks, **** and guts with cut down features and investments in second-hand technology.

These are not the same people. In COD4, Grant Collier was at the helm, and he was obviously someone who understood PC gaming. This new group is 100% dedicated to consoles, and not just that, they have no idea about PC gaming. Look at the transcripts.

The logic makes sense, why have a massive budget when you don't need one? You just waste time making things that are unnecessary. Although they obviously left out dedicated servers so?

I can't believe they genuinely think it will be a better experience for players this way...

            .

Well, let's see.... This is what I get from this, They spent $99.99 on IWnet, which means it will SUCK LARGELY, and be down EVERY DAY for server overload and maintenance. Perhaps some very talented code cracker will be able to figure it out how to make their own DS files for us

This is exactly right. The entire statement is loaded with contradictions. Modern Warfare 2 is very different from the last CoDs. They also added just about every idea a player asked for into it. Isnt that excess and hype right there? And if a large budget impedes development, then why have we been told that they are rushing to get the PC game finished after two years and a lot of things taken out of it while the consoles are apparently done? What happened to making the game along side each other? That seemed to have gone right out the window after CoD4.

Over funded projects will cause scope creep, that can actually be a big distraction and play havoc with the project schedule.

Remember in that video where he says people came into work and put in extra hours on the PC version above and beyond what was called for.

Those are the ones who aren't working at IW any longer, either that or they've been given strict instructions not to deviate from the console version when it's ported to the PC.

They already ruined the 'design a game the way we’d always design a game' part by taking out dedicated servers, limiting matches to 9v9, etc....

....They might as well go the whole 9 yards.

I was thinking why the hell could they have not spent the money on making the friggin PC version better. But instead they act too modest and turn the money down.

There is no modesty involved, they are just childish developers who love their consoles and couldnt give a rats *** about PC.

They need to sack Robert Bowling lol.

Honestly, I've never known a game to dig a hole for itself and then climb inside, pulling the dirt in with it.

                            It just gets worse. :|:
