Retailer Wars Could Mean Savings For You

Play your chips right and look at all the deals going on and you may get Modern Warfare 2 at a much cheaper rate. Check out this article from GamesIndustry.biz:
Smart consumers are taking advantage of various offers at retail to buy Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for less than half the recommended retail price.

The publisher has been heavily criticised for pushing up the console RRP of the latest from Infinity Ward to £54.99, but a cut-throat retail market is providing consumers with a number of options to avoid paying the inflated price. <!--more-->

UK retailer Gamestation is currently offered the game for £4.99 if a consumer trades in two games from a list that includes WET, Overlord II and Sacred 2: Fallen Angel. With Play.com selling Overlord II for just £9.99, users on website hotukdeals have already begun buying two copies of the Codemasters' title and trading it in for a pre-ordered copy Modern Warfare 2.

Online retailers are currently offering the basic Modern Warfare game for around £45, but all eyes will be on the supermarkets, which have already slashed two big releases – FIFA 2010 and Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising – in order to grab sales.

Last week, ASDA admitted that it sells some games at a loss because "customers continue to tell us that computer games are an expensive product in today's economic climate so we are working hard to try and offer them consistently good value for money within the games category".

I last reported the pricing going on at Amazon, but maybe there are better deals out there. Smart shopping could pay off and not just for Modern Warfare 2.

It'll go straight into the bargain bin as soon as people discover how poor the multiplayer component is going to be.

it's about time prices go down. valve published a report of the results when they had a 1/2 off L4D sale on steam this februrary. they learned that they sold so much that they made more money (profit) out of this 1/2 off weekend than the times they had sold combined leading up the sale.

game makers need to realize that if they make it more affordable, they can cut down more piracy and possibly make more money in the end. do they realize how f'd up this economy is? everyone's cutting prices on everything, they should get on board with it.

It's different with steam. In retail, money has to goes towards the production of the game, its packaging, store space, etc.

Valve can sell a billion copies of L4D on Steam for $1 each and not lose any money. But if they produce 1 billion copies of it on discs and everything that goes with them and then sell it them for $1 each, they won't be making money.

If it goes to the bargain bin, its only going to be for PC. Nothing has changed for consoles. I think its going to be the same strength as CoD4 is now to consoles down the road.

Dang, the Brits are taking over this site, what about us Yanks? $20 credit at Amazon or Walmart, nothing or full price and a 2 day delay at Steam, we feel special.

We just need to dig deeper.

I dont know what the conversion rates are on the £, it may be what we get discount wise.
