    Wired Article About Robert Bowling

Wired Magazine posted up an article about Robert Bowling (402). Very interesting read. Check it out:
When the hotly anticipated Modern Warfare 2 is released in November, millions of fanboys will be fragging each other in online matches, dissecting the level design in discussion forums, and grumbling about the game’s perceived shortcomings all over the Web. Then the work will really begin for @fourzerotwo. That’s the Twitter handle of Robert Bowling, a 24-year-old who serves as the game’s community manager. <!--more-->

He’s the liaison between the players and Infinity Ward, the developer of Modern Warfare 2. Such positions have long been de rigueur for makers of MMORPGs, which immerse players in a persistent online world. But as online play becomes increasingly important for console shooter games, more and more developers are hiring a go-between to interact with fans. Bungie has a community manager for Halo. Insomniac has one for Resistance. EA has one for Spore.

Bowling logs on to do battle with fans, eavesdrop on their discussions in the forums, and explain the developer’s design decisions to them; he also uses Twitter and Facebook to deliver a steady drip of sneak-peek screenshots and wonky weapon details to keep interest in the games piqued.

Bowling stumbled into this job after doing online marketing for indie bands in Kentucky. “I try not to think of what I do now as marketing,” he says. “I like to think of it as having the fans as part of the team.” He explains that what he does is make the game design process more of a collaboration with fans. Early on in the development of the latest game, Bowling tweeted, “Name one thing you’d like to see in Modern Warfare 2.” Requests for snow effects resulted in a blustery mission set in the perpetual winter of the Tian Shan mountain range in Kazakhstan. Still, keeping everyone happy isn’t easy. Here’s a look at some of his other daily duties.

Be the bad cop: Bowling investigates in-game misdeeds. Once he got a tip that a player was exploiting a flaw in the game’s physics. “He flew in front of me blocking my shots,” says Bowling, who banned the punk and helped get the bug patched.

Solicit feedback: He gauges fan opinion and asks for input on design decisions, like the shape of the thumbstick on a special controller being made for the game (winner: concave).

Flatter the fraggers: “It’s important to tell players when they get off a good shot,” he says. “It’s a conditioning thing.”

Push back politely: When players lobbied for the ability to dismember enemies, Bowling gently explained why that feature would not be added. “You have to filter what the community says through our design philosophy.”

Be a good sport: One gamer tried to embarrass Bowling by posting unflattering childhood photos of him on an enthusiast site. “I thought it was hilarious,” he says. “A photo of me with acid-washed jeans and a bowl cut.” Ah, the joys of being a public figure.

Strangely enough, the title doesn't match what is in the magazine that 402 posted a pic of that you can see here.

Now it takes time to create an article and get it published, so I am sure this was all before the PC changes were announced. It does show a lot of things that 402 does in the background.

Note, this guy is now getting threats of physical violence because of a decision he probably had no control over.

He is a lot better then some of the other reps. Anyone remember the douche from EA who did (don't know if he still does) BF2142?

Yeah, people are going a bit crazy on this and isn't helping the cause or situation. 402 does have a job and thats what he does. Sometimes its not easy and you have to do things you dont like. 402 is not writing the code for MW2.

I just hope they come out last minute and tell us they've had a decision change about the way they tend to handle the dedicated server problem. This game cannot reach its full potential otherwise.

Yeah, it's a job and he has no decision making input when it comes to the game. But it's his attitude that really pisses people off.

lol yea... design decisions like that are what really matter... not stuff like dedicated servers or anything like that... *sarcasim*

im so glad they take the time to find out what kind of thumbsticks console players want for their controllers... but they cant take the time to ask if we want dedicated servers or not... something thats a little more essential to the actual gameplay of the game itself... but on the other hand, i would have probably been surprised if they had actually asked if we wanted dedicated servers for pc... i would have thought that would be a given, especially with such a high profile game like MW2... but apparently not...

I was thinking about to make a video of Stukas bombing INFINTY WARD building in response of Hitler's anger for NO DEDICATED SERVERS and show to him. But i got no photos from the studio =(

I can understand people taking their anger out on him in some forum post as he's the company front man but making threats of physical violence? I hope he's taking them seriously, there are some real loose screws in the world.

Guilty by association, they see anyone from IW and they let them have it although I do agree that threats of violence is way out of line.

No Community manager is perfect, although I do question Rob's Information especially after he outright lied to shacknews.

He may not have lied to Shacknews. That may have been what he knew at the time.

Thats the problem with being the PR guy, you ARE IW and the focal point. Its part of the job and I would think it would suck.

Yes yes yes, but he's still a lying ***. I'm not buying this pathetic sympathy shot they are firing at us so we get back on IWs side.

No, and this shouldn't distract anyone from the goal or problem of no dedicated servers.

Me personally though, I think we have to watch out for saying 402 is the cause and remember its Activison/IW as a whole. Maybe higher ups, I dont know. Comanies are good at making scapegoats and hiding the blame. As much as I dont think 402 is "fair" toward the other communities, seeing a guy lose his job for doing what he was told so others dont take the heat is wrong also.

As well as getting beaten up by PC crazies.

Yes, Unfortunately we PCer's are putting the blame on him.

Even though he is a console boy, and probably has not played any of the mods made online(cause his 486 DX4) can't handle it...

I agree with the dude from the bashandslash interview. Maybe IW needs a PC community rep as well, and not a console boy!

                            TOO Little TOO late
