Infinity Ward Responds To Dedicated Server Fallout

Infinity Ward responds to the PC community outrage at the "no dedicated server" uproar.
Modern Warfare fansite bashandslash.com recently reported that Infinity Ward is removing dedicated server functionality from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. With dedicated servers and the server browser that comes with them replaced with custom-built matchmaking, PC gamers will have an online experience functionally identical to console players. Among other things, this means that clans can't run their own servers with their own mods and rulesets for their own private (or public, if they feel like crushing some scrubs for giggles) use.

Predictably, nerds across world took to the Internet with a wailing and a gnashing of teeth that would make the Left 4 Dead community proud. An online petition to bring back dedicated servers at the time of this writing stands at 100,000+ signatures. However -- and this may shock some gamers with advanced persecution complexes -- this move was not made to tweak the noses of the PC community. Infinity Ward heads Jason West and Vince Zampella explain the decision as a conscious effort to improve their game for the vast majority of their players.
<!--more-->
"We're just prioritizing the player experience above the modders and the tuners," says West. He points toward the mounting feedback IW has received from PC fans of Modern Warfare who couldn't find a decent server to play on between all of the cheaters, the insular communities, and huge skill level disparities that the original game's community fractured into. "We thought maybe it would be cool if the fans could play the game," he laughs.

IW says that gameplay concerns for the majority of MW2 players are the overriding reasons for the decision. Zampella downplays the obvious piracy prevention angle (IW has cited numbers of people online playing illegal copies of Modern Warfare up to 60 percent). "The Steam stuff helps with the piracy. I don't know that the matchmaking stuff does," he notes. West takes a shot at the motives behind some of the outrage, noting that there's money to made by selling dedicated servers and adspace on them: "It's a little dubious. Some of the people complaining are complaining with their pocketbook."

Again and again during our conversation, West and Zampella hammer the point that hardcore PC players lose very little to this change relative to the returns that casual to moderate fans will see. Clans can set up private matches to do their training or what have you; all they lose is the ability to customize the game on a deeper level with mods and such. Infinity Ward sees the addition of solid matchmaking and community support like IW-run tournaments to the PC as a huge win, and not something that could be done under the old system.

Why not have both? West does not want to include dedicated servers alongside the custom-built backend, stating that it would just "bifurcate the community."

You fix a lot of piracy issues with Steam...right, that's what all those key gens generating almost on traceable retail keys that Steam doesn't back of the copy you bought is already stolen. Me bets the problem is about to get a whole lot worse. By the by, good argument, but in effect you just called a majority of your community whiny...who need their hand held, need their minds made up for them, slapped down at times and pirates.

Cheaters are the reason why these as you say "Insular Communities" Moderate their own servers when Punkbuster doesn't.

I didn't know run and gun and grenade spam requires skill.

"Clans can set up private matches to do their training or what have you; all they lose is the ability to customize the game on a deeper level with mods and such."

I am sorry but I strongly disagree with this. If it wasn't for mods there wouldn't be Paintball mods or Freeze Tag or the Pro-mods that raise the competitiveness in the Call of Duty series. And the maps my god have you seen such devotion to custom maps made for Call of Duty 4? Its Fantastic!! Keeping out the mods then you will still have many complaints of weapons being over-powered and need nerfing.

Mods are made to balance weapons, make new gameplay maps and last but not least finally bring some games justice where others have failed like this:

You know what gets me is the "fanboy". Here I am going around telling people to calm down and lets see how things go and all that and then they release this! Give me a break.

Its not about fanboys of anything, its about choice. If I wanted to play on a console I would have bought an xbox or ps3. My choice was PC and if this lack of real information keeps up, my choice will not be IW.

Im staying openminded about this and want to see how things work out, but dont dismiss whats going on to be nothing more than fanboys that dont want any "improvements".

I never had a problem with finding servers for Cod4, and i only ever met 1 person that I instantly knew was a hacker, there were a few that were a bit dubious but there will always be those lucky shots or very skilled players.

IW needs to work on their mudslinging PR responses before they release them......that looks like it was written by a jaded teenager......it reeks of ignorance and contempt.

If they really gave a sh*t about hacking they wouldn't of sold out their anti cheat contract to the lowest bidder......and i still fail to see how VAC is going to stop hackers, you can purchase hacks for any game run on the VAC system, more so than the ones protected by PB.

This entire dedicated server thing is just a move to save money and control game content, i just wish they would be honest rather than trying to lie to us and tell us they are attempting to improve the game playing experience by setting it back 10 years. I'd respect them so much more if every word out of their PR department didn't sound like total bullsh*t being peddled to a uninformed community.

Their own video shows how horrible IWNet will be.

So if the host ragequits you have to sit and wait 10 seconds to play some more?
And that is on their internal test servers, I'm guessing. It will most likely take a lot longer for the handoff when actual players in different locations encounter it.
Again, who did they ask about this change? Who honestly told them that this was something ANYONE wanted?

I thought this was awesome...for consoles. They always complained about the host quiting and killing the game.

As far as console goes, this game is going to be awesome. It is! It has all the stuff they wanted. It even has a bunch of stuff PC gamers wanted.

We will see.

I think they're talking about the piss server browser they developed. It was perfectly fine in CoD and CoD2, they just f***ed up on that for CoD4 and now this is their solution to it.

I call BS. It was a nice try to sugarcoat the turd that they have created, but just b/c it looks like a Snickers does not mean we are not smart enough to distinguish the difference.

This is one of those times that the game developer is not going to listen to all of us 100,000+ gamers until we speak with our wallets come release time. They most likely think everyone is bluffing b/c 'we want this game so much' but they will probably not cave in and release dedicated servers until they see the pitiful sales on PC. We will see. Their decision on the matter, apparently post-release, will determine if I, and 100,000+ other gamers, decide to eventually purchase their game.

As mentioned, console gamers, sounds like you will get to have a great experience. For PC...R.I.P. CoD. :salute:

Unfortunately, they will still do very well in sales because of Console and much less serious PC gamers. I hope that the PC gaming community can have an impact in this scenario, but we will have to wait and see what happens come the release of the game.

Im starting to wonder if all this news ties in with the delay rumors. It was stated earlier by Robert that PC Multiplayer would be the way it always has been whereas we can clearly see a lot has changed.

Im starting to think that maybe IW didnt finish the PC version in time and so instead of announcing a delay at which rumors had already began spreading, they quickly ported the console version to PC as a quick fix, along with the matchmaking system and no dedicated servers etc.

I honestly am wondering about this right now....

Although this may be another ploy to make more people buy on the 360? Make IW look like a dominant console developer among its rivals?

Time will tell....
